Spending at Kerala temples is ostentatious

In a state that has frequently voted left, yet boasts of some of the most famous temples in the country, Kerala’s paradoxes are never too far from surface. Last year, the Supreme Court heard a plea against the use of crackers at the Vadakkunnathan Temple during the Thrissur Pooram fireworks. The petition alleged that indiscriminate use of crackers during festivals were causing high-level environmental pollution and danger to lives. Ironically, no one took note of the huge money spent for fireworks at Kerala temples. There are 36,800 small and big temples in the state and all celebrate annual festivals with poojas, cultural programmes and exhibitions, in addition to numerous daily rituals.

According to researcher Pala M Jayasoorya, working on the subject as dissertation, approximately Rs 28,000 crore is spent annually for temple celebrations. "This is a criminal waste of money for non-productive purposes,’’ he says. As compared to it, the annual plan expenditure for Kerala of Rs 7,700 crore looks tiny in comparison. Apparently, huge expenses for rituals cannot be curtailed for tantric and other cosmic reasons. According to Jayasoorya, opulence is meant to display pomp and vanity by affluent sections of the society, with money collected from common people.

The break up is revealing. Jayasoorya says engaging elephants in temples alone cost more that Rs 1,000 crore, drama and mimicry Rs 100 crore, while crackers and fireworks cost more than Rs 2,000 crore. Taking into consideration expenses like construction of concrete minarets, pillars and show walls, the report concludes that "money spent in a major temple for a week is enough to meet the expense of a church or a mosque.’’ Matha Amrithanandamayi Matt chief at Kochi, Swami Poornamrithanandapuri, concurs with the researcher. "The purpose of temples in the state should be reviewed. The money should be useful for society, especially devotees. That was the concept earlier, but now it is only a show of luxury.’’ Interestingly, Jayasoorya’s campaign is getting support from various temples, even though no one can still quite imagine a festival minus the elephants and fireworks. Income from temples has gone up so rapidly that even the 'secular’ Left Front government is planning to administer temples directly through a chief administrator. Though various Hindu bodies have demanded complete withdrawal of the state from the control of temples, they have yet to offer a cogent public explanation against the ‘criminal wastage’ of public money through ostentatious celebrations.

By raising the outer limits of spending, EC has tacitly given a fillip to political corruption

Till the 1980s, the political climate of the country was such that even honest and poor people found it easy to contest elections. Then came the era of muscle men and money mongers. Things began to change for the worse as all manner of people started getting elected, giving them a legitimacy that was undeserved. Since then, the political environment has hit rock bottom. Shoe throwing incidents are its mere manifestation. Time has come for political parties as well as institutions to sit and ponder upon the matter so that the sanctity of democracy is restored. The onus also lies on the voters to reject people who use muscle and money power to force their way into elected offices and legislators. Their vote gives these people a sort of moral victory. Naturally, restoring pride to this institution should be the foremost goal in the mind of the electorate.

When I contested for the first time in the 1967 assembly elections, my expenditure came to around Rs 4000. People won’t believe this anymore, it may sound like a fairy tale to them. The Election Commission too has capitulated with changing times. It has set Rs 10 lakhs and Rs 25 lakhs respectively as the outer limit for the expenditure for a candidate contesting assembly and parliamentary elections. This clearly means that people with large sums of money will be preferred by political parties. Very few honest men and almost no one who is poor, can afford such large sums of money. Political parties too will have to garner large sums as donation, which will mean the dominance of people with black money in the decision making of political parties. If a poor candidate raises that fund through donation, there will be obvious strings attached. It will lead to a spurt in corrupt practices as there is no incentive for anyone honest to come forward in public life.

There is another aspect. When workers and voters see so much money in play, they expect candidates to give them their “share”. Workers are very important for a political party to win elections. From party meetings to rallies, from mobilising people to cast their votes to monitoring the counting, all tasks are carried out by party workers. In that respect, they are formidable asset and no party will like to antagonise them. Consequently, their demands will be met. In our time, it was unthinkable for a party worker to ask for monetary remunerations.

Looking back at 1967, I recollect two interesting incidents that happened during the elections. I still remember how one of my workers, Prahlad, during my campaign in Hussainabad, refused to take money from me as remuneration. “Can’t I spend even Rs 10 for this endeavor of yours? Accept it as my contribution to your candidature”. In a similar incident in another village, I had given Rs 25 to the son of the Gram Pradhan to arrange for the conveyance for people who had no mean to reach the polling booth. When Pradhan Umar Khan came to know of it, he blasted his son saying: “You made me hang my head in front of Bhishm babu. Can’t I spend even 25 bucks for his candidature?” All these appear to be in the realm of fairy tales. In the last polls, a candidate in Bihar was caught with a truckload of liquor on election eve. It does not need a rocket scientist to tell you that it was not for that candidate’s personal consumption.

NEIL NITIN MUKESH SHARES WITH TSI, MEMORIES OF HIS MODEST HOLIDAY

I went with all my friends to Lonavala for two days on 31st December last year. In the span of one-and-a-half-years, that was the only holiday that I had! Th ose two days were bliss, more so because I went with those friends who are very important to me, for they always keep me grounded! So, it was great to spend quality time with them.

Th e holiday wasn’t expensive at all. In fact, it was a very reasonable trip. I felt good about the fact that you don’t really need to always spend a lot of money to enjoy yourself. Lonavala is just about 120 kms from Mumbai, so it took us only about three to four hours to reach. It wasn’t tiring at all. Th e whole trip was memorable. Since I’m very fond of photography, I carried my camera along and clicked pictures of the wildlife and natural beauty.

Th ere are a lot of places to visit in Lonavala. One can go to the Lion’s Point and Tiger Point, but we restricted ourselves to the city. I really do not regret not moving out a lot and exploring the place properly. It was fun to be just together with friends. Being there under the same roof and within those four walls with all the people I love was of a lot more importance to me.

Paris is where the Mona Lisa’s bemused smile can be witnessed from an arm’s length (there’s tight security around it), and apart from showcasing Leonardo Da Vinci’s works it is also where paintings of artists like Pablo Picasso and Monet can be seen, and thus museums abound in this city. People who live for studying museums can opt for the 2-days museum pass for about €30 that will allow access to all the 60 museums in Paris. Others might want to skip the rest (and save on all those entry tickets) and head straight to the Louvre, where one can gain entry for about €10 (or better still buy the Paris Metro network combo ticket that combines transport fares and no-wait entry to the Louvre for a neat €12.50) and easily spend a day looking at all the artifacts and get the chance to kowtow to Mona Lisa. Those who aren’t even a tad interested in museums should take pictures outside the Louvre, with the pyramid (which you might remember from “The Da Vinci Code”) as the backdrop, and instead use their moolah to buy a ticket for a cruise on the River Seine, for a lot of the city’s monuments like the Notre-Dame, the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower are built along the river banks.

Les Puces de Saint-Ouen is Paris’ flea market that can throw up quite a few interesting items at you, so do go and rummage through all the stuff on sale every Saturday-Monday. St-Germain-des-Prés, Les Halles, Rue St. Martin are some of the places one can find some great deals. The number of things one can see and do in Paris are countless – there is something for every person and every budget. Take my word for it, whether you’re on an $80 budget or an $8000 a day budget, there’s a lot to fall in love with in this city of love.

“IPL in SA is not ideal”

CEO of ICC, Haroon Lorgat has expressed his views on IPL fiasco in an exclusive interview with TSI's Satish Chapparike

How did you react to the shifting of IPL’s venue from India?

Safety and security are paramount, and the IPL is a domestic tournament run by the BCCI. If the organisers and the Indian government fail to agree on the tournament’s venue and schedules, and on how security is to be provided to the players, then the organisers will naturally do whatever is in their own best interests. From the IPL’s perspective, shifting it to SA is not an ideal scenario.

Do you think that the recent terror attacks in Pakistan on the Sri Lankan cricket team will have a long term impact on cricket in the subcontinent?

Security is always a concern, no matter where the game is being played. It is impossible to predict the long term impact of the issue on cricket anywhere. It is something that we have said we will begin to discuss at the ICC’s Board meeting, which is set to take place in Dubai in the middle of next month.

What do you think is going to happen to the 2011 World Cup, which is slated to be held in the subcontinent?

There is currently no plan to change the hosts of the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup – Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh continue to be in the picture. We will be monitoring the situation closely. The event is still scheduled for 2011 in the Indian subcontinent. There is always a back-up venue for any major ICC event – in 2007 the backup for the ICC CWC in the Caribbean was South Africa, and the backup venues for the 2011 event are Australia and New Zealand, something the ICC Board agreed to sometime ago. However, at present we are still committed to the World Cup being held in the subcontinent.

Don’t you think the way IPL is growing, the business generated by it will in time far exceed that of the BCCI and the ICC?

The IPL is owned and run by the BCCI, a member of the ICC. The IPL is a domestic event, and to try to compare it to an ICC international event is not appropriate. ICC events, such as the World Cup and the ICC World Twenty20, involve international teams, which are ICC member countries.

The ICC tried to patch up with both IPL and ICL in India. But the talks have failed. The fact is that a talented bunch of young cricketers in ICL have been denied a chance of representing their country. What do you have to say on this?

The ICC favours a resolution on the ICL issue that’s in the best interests of cricket. It is an issue that will be considered at the ICC’s next Board meeting in Dubai in mid-April. The ICC wishes to resolve the issue and attempted to facilitate a solution between the two parties. But this did not materialise, and so the BCCI is entitled to stick to its stand, and for good reason. The matter will now go before the ICC Board for further consideration.

If the same league trend continues in international cricket, will not Test cricket become extinct?

Test cricket is the pinnacle of our game, cherished by international players as the ultimate in our great sport. Our members have also expressed a desire to ensure the primacy of international cricket, and Test cricket in particular. This is why they have formed a working group made up of representatives of all ICC full members to ensure that Test cricket is promoted, so that it continues to flourish. The ICC and its members believe there is space for all three formats of the game to be embraced by all.

They spent crores of rupees on players like Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff. So if one is talking about hope, there is plenty going.

Yes. If the second season of IPL goes smoothly — and this is widely expected — these dream merchants will all, without exception, go laughing to the bank. And if they are able to get the authorities on board, even this glitches-ridden season could prove memorable.

Spirituality - Hope in troubled times

My own experience says that modern religious resurgence is the outcome of material frustration, and has nothing to do with spiritual realisation. At the beginning of the modern industrial age, man was happy. He felt like he was on his way to fulfilling his cherished dream of finding total happiness in this world. But what happened was quite the opposite. The more material progress man made, the more he came to be beset by problems – broken homes, job uncertainties, industrial problems, global warming, recession, social tension and war-related problems. All these facts suggest that this so-called return to religion is nothing but a kind of business of false hopes. It is a negative pathway.

For instance, I once happened to meet a youth from Canada. At one point in our conversation, he told me that he had a good job and a nice home there. When I asked him why he left his country for India and was walking around barefoot in a khadi dress, he replied:

“There I was comfortable physically, here I am comfortable spiritually.” But after some time, I discovered that the young man had again descended into frustration. His newfound ‘spirituality’ was, alas, merely a new form of religion, and as I had all along anticipated, it proved to be a very temporary phase. What it gave him was not the inner peace but a false sense of fulfillment. This is because form can never be a substitute for the spirit.

And here is another very interesting story. In 1893, Swami Vivekananda visited Chicago. It is said that one day, as he was walking on some street wearing two untailored sheets of cloth, an American woman, seeing him in this dress, said to her husband, “I don’t think he is a gentleman.” On overhearing her remark, Swami Vivekananda approached the woman and said politely: “Excuse me madam, in your country the tailor makes a man a gentleman; but the country from where I come, it’s the character which makes him a gentleman.”

Tourists and boatmen are hit adversely by court order

It is a race against time. For houseboat owners in Srinagar’s Dal Lake, the race is to rescue this year’s summer tourism and thus their income. And for the Lakes and Waterways Development Authority – whose job is to provide technical support in setting up mini-sewage treatment plants (STPs), the challenge is to prove their efficiency.

The court had ruled that houseboats would not be allowed to operate unless they all have STPs, as untreated sewage has completely ruined the lake. The Authority accelerated its efforts after the court gave a temporary respite by modifying its February 26, 2009 order, which had come after a report was submitted by the State Pollution Control Board on January 31 this year, blaming the houseboats for pushing the scenic lake to near extinction. The Authority has now been directed to stop the sealing process for one week, but restricted the houseboats from conducting any commercial activities during that period. The court has also directed the houseboat owners to take measures to handle solid and liquid wastes as per the Authority’s guidelines before the deadline expires, failing which the sealing will resume.

"So far mini STPs have been installed in two houseboats," says Sabah-Ul-Solim, a senior scientist with the Authority. “Four companies have approached us with their models and we will be monitoring their efficiency, then chose the one that serves the purpose best.”

But the court says that the installations will have to be completed within a week, and here lies a major problem. “We can be sure of test results only when we test the STPs in full capacity. That will take at least one full tourist season,” says Sabah-Ul-Solim.

Testing time is not the only issue facing the restoration of the lake, one of Srinagar’s primary attractions. Raw sewage produced by lakhs of people flow into it from the western banks where land encroachment is on the rise. Wrong engineering and inept policy decisions by concerned authorities have in fact added to the pressure on the lake.

“A detailed project report by Roorkee University shows that houseboats were responsible for only three per cent of the lake’s pollution,” says Azim Tuman, chairman of the Houseboat Owners Association. He blames the Authority for neglecting his association’s advice while framing policies to prevent pollution.

“If the lake’s natural water system was not affected, it would be in a much better shape. There were several canals that flowed into the lake earlier, and connected it with rivers and other waterbodies. Almost all of them have been blocked,” he says. “The worst happened this year when authorities neglected our plea to allow the water level to recede during the winter. This stopped polluted water from flowing out and fresh water flowing in which would have helped the lake,” he held.

The new security bill will generate an army of private guards in India. They are expected to be the eyes and ears of the government and provide muscle to India’s intelligence gathering network, report Anil Pandey and Vikash Kumar

26/11 remains a red letter day in the chequered history of private security agencies in India. Private commandos, Wilson Benjamin Mandlik and Sarjerao Sadashiv Bhosle, were on routine guard duty at the Oberoi Trident around 9.45 pm when terrorists began their deadly attack. According to available accounts, they were the first two who came eyeball to eyeball with the killers, but without instantly realizing their motives. Before they could do that, they were mowed down in a hail of bullets.

But the firing had alerted their third companion, Appaso Maruti Patil, (see photos) who was in the parking lot. He rushed towards the site of firing and engaged the terrorists, reportedly single handedly with a licensed firearm, but nothing close to what the attackers were carrying, for a little under an hour. His hide and seek with the butchers continued, shot for shot. The alert but injured Patil used that time to inform his control station about the enormity of the terrorist attack. Tragically, he was shot while talking on the cell phone, making one final call. The terrorists had managed to spot him.

Welcome to the world of these unsung heroes, the world of Patils, Mandliks and Bhosles. Unlike the National Security Guards (NSG), Naval Police, local armed constabulary and other brave hearts who perished that evening in Mumbai, there are’nt too many who have spared a thought for these warriors. Patil’s bravery for instance, is unlikely find a footnote in history, considering that it has gone unreported in the media. Brave as their acts were, they were not isolated. Twelve hours before the NSG reached Trident and Taj hotels on 26/11 - and nine minutes after the first gun shots rang out in the corridors of the luxury hotel - commandos of a private security agency had reached an unmanned exit and begun a clinical rescue operation helping out guests who could be evacuated.

The juggernaut of militancy

Azeem Saleem, working in a foreign-funded project in Lahore, expressed deep concern on the economic fallout of this incident. He felt that foreign investors would think twice before investing their money in a country where security is precarious. It is possible that they consider pulling out their investments unless the government shows willingness to deal with the problem. But first of all, the culprits need to be identified.

The attack came at a time when the government is grappling with various crucial issues. The Sharif brothers of the estranged coalition partner Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) have been disqualified by the Supreme Court from contesting elections, while the president imposed an ill-advised governor’s rule in Punjab to preclude the possibility of PML-N nominating a new chief minister in place of Shahbaz Sharif, who has been effectively removed from his position by the SC ruling. The simmering tensions between the coalition partners have turned into an open confrontation. The PML-N has thrown its weight behind the lawyers’ movement and took out a long march in Islamabad for the restoration of judiciary sacked by former president Musharraf on November 3, 2007, after the proclamation of emergency. The attack on the Sri Lankan team overtook protests by PML-N supporters, leading some to suggest that it was the handiwork of government agencies to divert attention from domestic issues and diffuse international pressure that came as a result of Mumbai attacks. Others were quick to find connect as far beyond as the hideouts of LTTE, which has been nearly vanquished by Sri Lanka’s security forces.

Detracting the conspiracy theories being hatched by the media, senior journalist Wajahat Masood was categorical that it was the work of al-Qaeda. We should not read too much into it, he said. “The objective is to isolate Pakistan internationally and destablise it internally.” Ruling out agencies’ involvement in the attack, he said that it has created all sorts of problems for the government. Since Sharif brothers no longer hold the Punjab government, they would be keen for the success of the long march. In his view, the terrorists’ escape was as much the result of their deep penetration and support bases in all parts of the country as it was of the abysmal failure of security apparatus.

Education - Low grades? Don’t despair

In the last few years, students with enormous will power and little means, those who had to drop out of class 6 or 7 because they could not afford to pay fees, have came back, taken their higher secondary and other exams; came into contact with Super 30 where we guided them and worked hard with them on the high road to success. Several of them are in IITs and some of them in top companies. Had they believed that second division means the end of the world, they would not have been where they are right now. Suresh Ram, son of a brick kiln worker, just about managed to complete his class 10. Today he is a final year student at IIT Delhi. For the last three years though, the IIT has made 60 percentage mandatory for taking its entrance exams.

In India, more emphasis is laid on getting marks. Instead of letting children specialise in a subject of their choice, parents tend to make marks the only yardstick for success. Students with exceptional talent in any particular discipline should be encouraged to attain knowledge and excel.

I am an example. I was overly attached to mathematics. So when I reached Patna Science College, I set up the Ramanujam mathematics club where like minded people assembled for lectures. Some of my papers have been read at national and international seminars. At 18, I wrote a paper titled ‘on the squairing of the digits of a number’. I was invited to Cambridge University where I could not go because I did not have money. The biggest problem I faced was that I had to additionally study history, geography, Hindi and other subjects and I never got time to pursue research in mathematics. Teachers like Ramendra Pratap Sinha at the Patna High School and DP Verma at college were a constant source of encouragement.

China and Russia have excellent systems of selecting bright students. It can be evidenced from the fact that China has emerged number one in the last 17 out of 20 International Maths Olympiad. Their education system is geared to select extraordinarily bright students at a young age who excel in one subject and are trained in an intense and rigourous way. To have common arrangement for extraordinarily bright students and average students is a big mistake. Why is it that India is performing so poorly at the International Maths Olympiad? From my own experience, I can say that ‘catch them young’ policy will fetch good results. It is important to identify extraordinarily brilliant students before 10 + 2 and guide them into an area of specialisation so that best results can be obtained.

Success and failure are part of life. If people like Suresh Ram had taken a defeatist view then life would have taken a useless course. It is important to realise your true worth. You may not have got the marks you wanted, but there are endless possibilities. Maybe, you could turn into an exceptional painter, an entrepreneur, a player or a musician. The key is not to get depressed or frustrated.

Marks do not matter

If a student has good command over a particular subject, but is ordinary in all others, he is unable to score good marks. This leaves him depressed and low on confidence. Academics feel that we need a system that is able to judge a student’s real aptitude and encourage him/her to take up the right subjects. That would obviate the possibility of a situation in which a student feels trapped and inadequate.

Had Sachin Tendulkar’s elder brother not spotted his hidden talent and encouraged him, the world would have been deprived of an exceptional cricketing icon. But everyone isn’t Sachin. There are many who end up defeated and dejected.

Good grades do play a role in helping youngsters get plum jobs, but marks are certainly not everything. It is the duty of teachers and parents to spot a student's talent and then hone it.

Unfortunately, even today more importance is given to marks. Securing a first division has become a status symbol for parents. Teachers reward students who get high grades.

But they don’t realise that there are many students who, despite their insignificant academic performances, succeed in cracking the civil services exams, the toughest in India.

Even today, a large number of parents want their children to study science. They want theirs wards to become doctors and engineers. Thus there is intense pressure on children.

Director (academic) of the Kota-based coaching centre, Career Point, Shailendra Maheshri tells TSI that low grades are not a hindrance in clearing engineering and medical entrance tests.

“There are many students in our institute who don’t have good grades. Many have third division, but that has not stopped them from getting into the IITs and other prestigious institutes. Many among them are from the Hindi medium. The mantra to success is hard work,” he says. “From last year, IIT has set a 60 per cent bar on students appearing for entrance exams. But there are many prestigious institutes where students with less marks can still get admission.”

Moreover, students today have a wider range of career options than ever before. There was a time when the engineering and medical courses were regarded as the only worthwhile options, so there was a rush of students for these streams. But now other careers like tourism, information technology, business management, economics, sociology, acting and fine arts, among numerous others, are in great demand.

Professor JL Sharma of Delhi University says: “After globalisation, the demand for many less fancied subjects has increased manifold. Subjects that were once called “dry” are no more boring. Earlier, students would hesitate to take up English and Hindi (Honours) but the situation has changed. There is a huge rush among students to study these subjects. So things are changing for good.”

How did you manage to do so well in Uttar Pradesh?

After the 2007 debacle, when I was appointed president, we had a brainstorming session where it was decided that we must popularise the welfare schemes introduced and implemented by the central government.

Which was your first break in UP?

The first break came with Bundelkhand. A large number of farmers were committing suicides. I appealed to the high command that Rahul should visit the area. We did the initial research there. We found that the National Rural Employment Gurantee scheme and other central government programmes were not being implemented.

I appealed to the high command to visit the area and to draw the attention of the state government. So, Rahul agreed and highlighted the issue. Chief Minister Mayawati lost it and began talking bad about the Gandhi’s. Public interest grew. They learnt that Rahul was asking the state government why the money received from the central government was not reaching the impoversihed people.

What were the few big steps the Congress party took to revive itself in UP?

We started ‘hisaab maango abhiyaan’ from December 2007 to July 2008. We used to hold public meetings at block level, panchayat level and then hold press conferences. Then Rahul Gandhi paid a visit to flood-hit villages in Uttar Pradesh. This visit became a big issue.

What else has changed in the working style of the UPCC?

Congress president Sonia Gandhi constituted a high-level 32-member coordination committee for Uttar Pradesh in 2007. I am the chairperson, but the whole team works together. It is a great team work.

This was no Jallianwala Bagh where thousands of Sikhs were massacred while protesting against the British rule. Children born post 1980 (me included) had read about the anguish and the atrocities on Sikhs had to bear during partition. I had heard stories from my grandmother when she along with her family had to leave behind their ancestral home and all belongings in Rawalpindi to move lock, stock and barrel to Delhi. I could hear the excruciating pain she had suffered and still lingers on in her memory, 62 years of Independence. I had developed a deep abhorrence towards the Britishers who had ruled our country. But this was worse. In a span of just three short days (October 31-November 2, 1984) over 3,000 Sikhs were massacred in New Delhi. Reason: On October 31, 1984, India’s then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her two Sikh bodyguards – Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh – in retaliation for the storming of the Sikh holy shrine of the Golden Temple in Amritsar in June during Operation Blue Star.

I grew up as a regular Delhiite, with out a care in the world. I never bothered about the political scene in the country. I was untouched both emotionally & physically by the ghosts left behind by the 1984 carnage on Sikhs in the Capital or the 1992 bloodbath in Mumbai or for that matter, even the ghastly killing in Godhra.

Meanwhile, the political scene in the country was heating up. On April 17, 1999, Atal Bihari Vajpayee lost a confidence vote in the Lok Sabha and consequently tendered the resignation of his coalition government. So, on April 26, then President of India, late K. R. Narayanan, dissolved the Lok Sabha and called for early elections.

I had just turned major, but I didn’t have the voter’s I-card, so couldn’t cast my vote. Being an army man’s daughter, discussions around politics and government were very normal during the dinner table and the entire family used to chip in.

TSI Five-O: A wedding you’d rather not be invited to

Yes, “Bride Wars” is a chick-flick. It has its warm fuzzy moments and then some scenes where the two protagonists are at their bitchiest best, with a catfight thrown in for good measure. Two best friends, Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Liv (Kate Hudson), since their childhood days have dreamt of having a perfect June wedding at The Plaza. But when both of them find themselves getting wedded at the same time and the date clashes the two begin to pull mean and wicked tricks on each other and refuse to change the venue of their wedding! The film, like most chick-flicks, is predictable, but there’s just something really shallow about this film. The film is funny in bits, and as it moves towards its obvious climax, one cannot help but notice the laziness of the writers who have all but wasted the potential of the characters. Girl-on-girl action has never been more childish.

Election results in Iran show that the incumbent president and his conservative friends have retained their hold on the key working class constituency, reports Mohammad Ali Qummi from Tehran

The post–election victory celebrations in Iran of about half-a-million supporters listening to victory speeches at Tehran’s Valiasr Square, the most striking feature was the contrast: more than ten times the number had gathered to listen to freshly re-elected President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as compared to what his main rival, Mir Hossein Mousavi, had been able to muster at the same spot a few days ago.

It also has signals of what lies ahead. In what may lead to raising Iran’s existing tensions with the West and Israel, Ahmadinejad’s return as president with a sweeping margin struck a raw nerve with the western establishment. Iran’s interior minister, Sadeq Mahsouli, while announcing the result, said Ahmadinejad won 62.6 per cent of the popular vote, beating his reformist rival Mousavi, who got 33.75 per cent. The national voting percentage stood at a whopping 85 per cent.

The results were received with shock and anger by Mousavi supporters. Thousands of them marched into Tehran to protest. Many pelted stones at baton-wielding police. ‘Down with the dictator’, they shouted as they broke out into the central Valiasr Square, close to the interior ministry. The number swelled after Mousavi declared that he would not give in to the ‘dangerous scenario’ faced by Iran as a result of the strongly contested vote. “Ahmadinejad has indeed won. But the share of the vote has left me perplexed. The opposition in Iran may protest this election as being fraudulent. It at least proves that the nation is in flux,” Alireza Nader of Rand Corporation told TSI.

Several western analysts and think tanks have declared the Iran poll result as fraudulent. “It is easy to see why the western media cottoned on to the “fraudulent election” line in Iran. It is their pre-conceived notion. There is talk of how ‘ballot papers ran out’ and how ‘names of supporters of Mousavi’ were missing. They give reference to “exit-polls”, with the sample size of 4,000, which were done in northern Tehran and which prominently declared Mousavi ahead. Western diplomats and analysts – virtually the only source of information – pointed out how “entire Iran came out in support of Mousavi” after the results were declared.

But there is a catch. Indian readers could well draw up a parallel: when was the last time exit polls in Asia proved right? In a vibrant democracy like India, they have been quite off the mark. Also, unlike other countries in the Middle East, Iran has a huge population of about 70 million. An exit poll with a sample size of 4,000 is at best inadequate.

Also, just as Delhi is not India, Tehran is not Iran. Most of these experts have the list of usual suspects as their sources and it is quite likely that sticking to just a set of people could have resulted in overlooking other aspirations.

Mehran Kamrava, a specialist on Iranian politics at Georgetown University, told TSI: “Most of these journalists from New York Times, CNN and the likes have been talking to people in north Tehran, who tend to vote overwhelmingly against Ahmadinejad.” It is likely that they got it wrong.

Indeed, the tendency has been to get carried away with the largely urban-centric rhetoric which finds its most vocal supporters in Tehran. It may not reflect the mood in other parts.

Prime Minister Rudd hurried into Parliament this week to reassure India we weren't racist at all: "Australia is a country of great diversity, harmony and tolerance." Premier John Brumby agreed, and offence at the charge of racism was taken on almost every talk-radio station in the country. Yet who can blame Indians for thinking this worst of us, and treating Rudd's denials as mere spin, when we've spent so much time telling the world we really are steeped in racism, right up to our red necks?

Only last year, Rudd himself announced we'd been so evilly racist that we'd even stolen Aboriginal children by the thousands just because they were black - a false claim cheered in every school despite the inability of "stolen generations" activists to name even 10 such "stolen" children. More nonsense, yet how keen our opinion makers have been to slander us as bigots on evidence just as bogus. So, after accusing ourselves of so much racism with so little reason, why should we now be surprised when Indians agree that - yes, indeed - we're as racist as we've always said? The difference is that this time we stand to lose billions of dollars from our trade in education services to India. Stupidity becomes too stupid to endure when it costs, and the fact is we really aren't so racist at all. Indeed, our problem may in part be the opposite. That so many Indian students are bashed and robbed can be largely explained by the kind of part-time jobs they tend to take, being hard workers - the late shifts in 7-Eleven stores, taxis and petrol stations, for instance.

Imagine how safe these students are when they then go home alone late at night, often walking or taking near-deserted trains back to the tough suburbs where the cheap rents are. How safe would your own children be? But some attacks aren't so easily explained away. Some, you might say, are "racist" in that Indians are famously peaceable - less likely to break the law and less likely to fight back when attacked by those who do. To thieves and thugs, they're soft targets. That said, other attacks, as Victoria Police now belatedly admit, are indeed no-mucking-about racist. But to whose shame are these racists, really?

True, video footage of the pack-attack on Sourabh Sharma on the train shows thugs of various ethnicities, including, it seems, the Anglo kind. But what police and many journalists refuse to confirm or even discuss is what victims and their spokesmen repeatedly say - that many of their attackers are Africans, Islanders and, less often, Asians who are newcomers themselves, beneficiaries of our eagerness to seem kind and tolerant.

Indian students too should mend their ways if they want the attacks to stop, writes Mintu Brar from Brisbane

Attacks on Indian students in Australia are being condemned the world over and rightly so because it is a very serious matter. But no attempt has been made to get the crux of the matter: why are these racial attacks taking place?

Indians have been living in Australia for over a century and never have they been targeted before. What has gone wrong? Could Indian students be responsible for generating this anger? It is important to go into the causes. It is important to remember that behind every incident are mischievous elements who escape while innocents like students Upkar Singh or Sarwan Kumar become targets. Statistics tell us there are 90,000 Indian students in Australia for higher education and that is a sizable presence in a sparsely populated country. The truth is that most Indian students come here not just to study and return, but settle down.

Many students have succeeded in doing so through hard work and dedication. But since visa relaxations have come into place, there is an undesirable, minority element of about 5 per cent Indians who have come here and given a bad name to the remaining 95 per cent. I would like to recount a few incidents that I have been witness to and these will help understand the genesis of the anger of Australians. First is the experience of hooliganism by Indians, in particular Punjabi students, during the ground New Year Eve celebrations at Sydney. These celebrations draw tourists from all over the world. I attended the celebrations and was truly impressed by their immaculate arrangements and grand style. Although fireworks start only at midnight, people had assembled at the Harbour Bridge by 4 in the evening and there was only a narrow path for emergency exit. To my horror a loud noise was followed by a group of my young countrymen pushing their way through the crowds shouting slogans. This was followed by another group of Indians who come in beating drums and Hare Krishna, shoving and muscling their way through the crowd.

In coordination with the armed forces, they planned combing operations,” Dar says. But their reign is considered to be one of the worst in terms of human rights violations. While they killed militants, civilians and sympathisers were not spared either. In south Kashmir's Anantnag town, the free hand given to counter-insurgents triggered a new wave of militancy.

Aijaz Ahmad Turrey was killed in a precision strike by suspected militants along with an accomplice, Nisar Ahmad Mir, in Janglat Mandi market near his home in Anantnag. Turrey's wife, Rubi, was away in Amritsar for the treatment of her son, Irfan, who had lost his eyesight in an accident. On her return, Rubi learnt her husband had already been laid to rest in the graveyard. “A woman in a burqa (veil) came to their camp with the news that an IED had been planted in the market. The two rushed to the spot where militants shot them dead,” she says. Rubi's journey of grief began from the graveyard itself: there was no one to share her pain.

The taboo of being a renegade’s widow led to instant social boycott. Relatives, except for some close ones, stopped visiting. Feeling the hateful stares of neighbours, she caged herself in her home until another catastrophe struck. Her husband had bought a migrant Kashmiri Pandit's house through a middleman but died before the deal could be sealed. "We could not pay the dues and had to leave the house. For three months, we lived in a shed in my brother's house," says Habla, Aijaz's mother. The women say they sold their jewellery to buy the house they now live in, a brick and cement box with three rooms atop each other. Their story – like those of thousands of other such families – is part of a harsh but hidden reality of today’s Kashmir.

An unprecedented “MLA bazaar” cropped up. Independent MLAs like Enos Ekka and Harinarayan Rai made so much money that they did not know where to put it, and tribal leaders started visiting beauty parlours to pick up hues commensurate with their new-found, illegitimate wealth!

Arjun Munda’s second tenure lasted 18 months. It was then that several MOUs were signed but not a penny was invested. Transfer of officers became an industry and corruption stormed the state. At that time too, independent MLA Madhu Koda raised the banner of revolt and the United Progressive Alliance at the Centre opportunistically sided with him, toppling Munda. With a non-party person in the saddle, corruption reached its nadir. Koda ruled for 23 months, when again Soren decided it was time for his second coming. After a lot of horse-trading he managed it, finally, but just after four months, he had to relinquish the chair on being defeated in the Tamad by-poll.

All this reflected in the state’s development report card. In fact, today, the scenario is such that there is no trace at all of the Rs 12,000 crore drawn from the exchequer in the name of developmental projects. State officials have taken out Rs 6,000 crore in the name of ‘advance’, for which none, till date, has given any account or returned the monies. At the same time, there were scams in not just food grain distribution, but even in the salt distribution to the impoverished.

Rupees two lakh crore in interim budgetary allocation for the rural sector. The game continues… more money for farmers, and more suicides… and a growing army of widows. TSI's satish chapparike trudges across Vidarbha for ground-truthing the trauma

“Farmers are the real heroes of India’s success story.” Thus spake India’s Finance Minister, interim, Pranab Mukherjee, at the interim budget speech on February 16, 2009, adoring the soldiers of India’s farm sector in the Parliament.

In the interim, however, on the same day and roughly the same time, 1,162 km away from the Capital, in the hinterland of Vidarbha, two of his 'real heroes’ huts were immersed in grief. Those huts in Tonglabad and Nandora villages stood as symbols of the agony of India’s agrarian sector, a theatre of the surreal of government largesse that never reaches the poor and policies meant to create an agrarian boom that busts families and only boosts the numbers of farmland suicides.

Kalavati, yes, Kalavati, the Vidarbha farmer’s widow who is leading an ‘army’ of one lakh farmland widows… Kalavati, the emblem of what ails our farmers, the abysmal story of lip service and the kiss of death, relentless, daily, across the country. On February 16, too, as and when Mukherjee was raving 'Jai Kisaan' in the Parliament, two new Kalavatis – freshly widowed – and their children sat helplessly in front of their huts – in two different Vidarbha villages – under the shadows of their beloved ones, now departed!

Earlier, when Mukherjee was busy scripting his speech on February 15, a day before the budget session, Ravindra Balakrishna Jalmaker and Krishna Haribabu Sathe, two of his ‘heroes’ from Vidarbha scripted their last acts. Crop failure, indebtedness, humiliation, distress… and then… a noose hanging from a tree or a bottle of endosulfan.

Chronotopia, with its multi–racial production crew, was also demonstrative of the Festival as a forum for international collaboration and cultural exchange, ensuring art partook of the fruits of globalisation too. In contrast, sitting in for Quantransitions was a relatively more indigenous experience, albeit no less intriguing. The Rhythmosaic Dance Company quartet from Kolkata led by husband–wife team Ronnie and Mitul, with Amit and Prasanna showcased Quantum Mechanics of a Psychophysical Journey through an elaborate pastiche combining Kathak and western jazz moves. Set to minimalist music – even absent in parts – the audience was inevitably drawn to the kinetics on stage, ranging in tempo from near-stillness to a blur of motion. Physics, for once, had everyone riveted!

After the 30-minute quantransition experience, Jonah Bokaer presented Charade, wherein elaborate acrobatics by him were seen replicated over digital animation on the screen, realised, as a video showed, by attaching sensors to his body. At one point, he solemnly surveyed the audience while munching on an apple, a move he later described as “returning the gaze” trick, as an attempt to exact what is otherwise rarely doable in live theatre or dance.

As the aficionados filed in for the shows, excitement and curiosity sounded in equal measure. Said Jaissy John, business developer for a leading cellphone manufacturer, and a contemporary dance student herself until ‘connecting people’ at work left her little time for the arts, “I used to be more of a regular at such events, but it’s been a while now… What makes contemporary dance interesting is that it’s like abstract art; it breaks away from the structures as defined in traditional forms.”

However, football unlike any other sports promises huge returns. It’s the moolah that lures investors to organise the game ever year. The return that this game generates annually is probably much more than the economies of many developing nations. There aren't many who believe that cupid can strike with just one look but this certainly was the case with Nusli Wadia, Chairman of Bombay Dyeing and Manufacturing Ltd and Managing Director of Britannia Industries Ltd. During one of his business trips, he had first seen his wife, Maureen Wadia in an Air India flight and was completely bowled over. But, it was certainly not the case with Maureen. Hailing from Allahabad, Maureen had been an ambition lass all her life. She was groomed to be a teacher but had also applied for the job of an air hostess with Air India, a career her parents opposed vehemently. Little did they know that their daughter would end up meeting her prince charming in one of the flights. After the flight ended, Nusli sent out a message to her for a meeting. But, Maureen dismissed the proposal on his face. However, fate brought them together again when Maureen was selected to model in one of the Bombay Dyeing's commercial. This time the duo met again and Nusli was able to woo his lady. As the love blossomed, the two tied the knot soon and were then bestowed with their first son - Ness and later on with Jehangir.

It is a terribly hard life, romanticised Hindi films showing bum swinging Helen dancing to “Mehebooba- mehebooba…” notwithstanding. And to say it is dangerous is a euphemism. And yet, in such terrifying circumstances blooms love. Jagan Gurjar had a price of Rs 12 lakh on his head, and more than 70 heinous crimes to his name. The four-and-a-half feet Komesh herself had jumped into the ravines to avenge the murder of her father, Chhitariya Gurjar of Dhaulpur district, Rajasthan. Jagan could have easily found another woman, for "among the third generation of Chambal dacoits, who no longer follow the glorious code of honour of Daku Man Singh, it is now normal for dacoits to abduct women for pleasure”, says ex-MLA Parshuram Bhadauriya, founder of the NGO Lok Chetna Manch. And yet, Jagan Gurjar surrendered.

The code of honour was established by Daku Man Singh, and it forbade touching women. It also forbade women in the gang, but then, had people stuck to it, there would have been no Putli Bai, no lilting Alha Udhal – the ballads sung for Chambal heroes. Or should it be put the other way round? Putli Bai would not have become the legend she is had she not been a fabulous singer of Alha Udhal. Goharbano, the Muslim lady from a poor family, had become an artist (singing and dancing) to keep the hearth burning. It could not be long before she would come to the notice of Daku Sultana. “He started frequently calling her. Soon, they were in love, despite Putli Bai – her professional name – knowing the dangers ahead,” Prof PVS Tomar, sociologist and expert on Chambal bandits told TSI. Sultana was killed in a police encounter in 1950, after which Putli became the sardar of the gang, and a complete terror. It was natural that many in her gang would propose to the dainty damsel who could sing and kill cops with equal alacrity. But Putli remained loyal to the memories of Sultana and stayed single till she was herself killed in 1956.

But the young are undeterred. Ask Samina, 19, who sits in a remote corner in a coffee shop in Srinagar with her boyfriend. “No one has the authority to impose his or her moral diktats on me. No one can curb my liberty and force me to think in a particular way,” she stresses. She says she purchased a Valentine’s Day card from a shop in Lal Chowk much earlier as she suspected that groups like Forum Against Social Evils (FASE) would prevent card sales.

Even the card sellers believe that the impact this year was minimal. “I have completely sold out all the Valentine’s Day cards I had. Young people came without any fanfare to my shop and silently bought those cards.

Obviously it means that these cards were being addressed to someone,” said a shopkeeper who preferred anonymity. Evidently, cupid has been caught in the crossfire of the clash of civilisations.

He won because of great oratory skills and now he has to deliver. We need to look at Modi and Obama in the same perspective. Both signify new age politics. Obama has to bring back to life the greatest country on earth, while Modi has to give the most important country a new direction.

What made you start a political party for Muslims?

India is a socialist, secular and democratic country but criminals are controlling power. The most affected are Muslims who have been entirely sidelined. Other sections like Dalits have also been marginalised. I talk of social justice for all the oppressed people, particularly Muslims. Muslims have been kept away from their right to vote. Only in Mau, UP, names of 85,000 Muslims are missing from the voter list. In entire India, 35 to 55 per cent of Muslim names are missing.

Why do you believe that Muslims would vote for you instead of established parties?

Muslims have remained in a dilemma since independence. The so-called secular parties have been wooing them creating a fear of BJP. They projected BJP as the largest enemy of Muslims. So, Muslims never voted on agendas and issues. These parties want to keep them fearful and unsecured. Their condition is deteriorating every passing day. So, Muslims need to come out of this vicious circle. But, I insist that Muslims should not be swayed by emotions.

Why so many parties instead of a National Muslim Party?

We first wish to strengthen our stronghold and capture power. Then we all will join hands to share power at the centre.

A controversy like this is hardly conducive in the poll year

The Election Commission (EC) of India is a hallowed global institution. It is held out as an example for the world to see, how the three-member body - which derives its strength from the Constitution and cannot be removed under any circumstances except a lengthy impeachment motion - conducts elections in the world’s largest and noisiest democracy.

Events last week also prove just how much the EC and India’s institutions have changed since it became a three-member body of Election Commissioners in 1989. Before that, a single-member CEC could barely announce poll results without verbal missives from the top political leadership of the day.

The soon-to-be-outgoing CEC, N Gopalaswami, turned a new political leaf when he sent a suo motu recommendation to the President of India that Election Commissioner Navin Chawla should be removed from office on alleged grounds of "partisanship.’’ The President has forwarded the CEC’s missive to the Prime Minister. The recommendation has come exactly three months before Gopalaswami superannuates from office and before the 15th General Election this year.

The 'recommendation' came in the light of a BJP petition of January 30, 2008, which listed various allegations against Chawla and demanded that he be removed as Election Commissioner. On January 12, 2009, the CEC sent his report to the President of India 'recommending' that Chawla be removed under Article 324 (5) of the Constitution.

The move has predictably set the cat among the pigeons. Legal luminaries like Shanti Bhushan and Fali Nariman have said the CEC has no unilateral powers to sack a fellow Election Commissioner. "The CEC's power under Article 324 (5) of the Constitution [EC shall not be removed from office except on the recommendation of the CEC] is not a power to punish or get rid of other commissioners," Shanti Bhushan told TSI.

Neither the terrorists nor the government cares

"The Srilankan army continues to shell and bomb every place where people have sought asylum, especially those places which have been announced as ‘safe-zones’. Even as terrified Tamils flooded one such ‘safe-zone’, a barbaric incident took place. The army started heavy shelling. Three hundred people died on the spot, and many were injured. I saw it myself.” Thus said an E-mail from a Catholic priest to DBS Jeyaraj, senior political analyst of Sri Lanka. Jeyaraj didn’t disclose the identity of the priest for security reasons.

According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), an estimated 300 local staff members of the UN's humanitarian organisation are trapped in the Vanni area because LTTE refuses to let them go. Altogether, some 250,000 civilians are now trapped.

"The government can't just blame everything on the LTTE and wash its hands off,” says Brad Adams, Asia Director of HRW. The latest artillery attack on the paediatric ward of Puthukkudiyiruppu hospital in Vanni, the last functioning health centre in the war zone, killed many, and most of them were children and women. Though it is not clear who fired on them, Dr Thurairajah Varatharajah, the top government health official in the area, said the shells appear to have been fired by the Srilankan army itself.

Amazingly, Srilanka's defence minister Gotabaya Rajapaksa told Sky TV's Alex Crawford that the attack was justified because hospitals are not allowed to be there inside war zones and that is what the area was when the shelling was done.

Tragically, most people were unaware of the 48-hour time for safe passage offered by the government, Dr Satyamoothy, Government Medical Officer of Killinochchi, told BBC Tamil radio channel.

Both LTTE and the government blame each other for this civilian trauma. But it seems very clear that neither of the two warring parties have any consideration for the civilians’ lives, which did not figure in any of their calculations. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay has criticised both parties. She said, “People trying to flee conflict areas are reportedly either being prevented from doing so, or being arbitrarily detained. It seems there may have been very grave breaches of human rights by both sides in the conflict.”

Raj Kundra & Shilpa Shetty To Produce A Film Together

While Shilpa Shetty gets ready to launch her own production house with films featuring her and later her sister, her beau, London entrepreneur Raj Kundra, is all set to move to Mumbai to be with her. While the couple is expected to tie the knot next year, Shilpa and Raj are already into business partnerships in various fields.

The two will be jointly producing films. The first one will be launched early next year, but it won't feature Shilpa.

Raj, who produced the thriller “Strangers” with Jimmy Shergil, Kay Kay Menon and Nandana Sen from London, is all set to move to Mumbai to look after Shilpa and her family professionally and personally. Marriage for Shilpa is just around the corner. Says a friend, "The two have already bought a house together in Mumbai…. Shilpa's dream home with an in-built spa and gym. And as far as Shilpa's parents are concerned Raj is the perfect son-in-law."

Continues the friend, "Raj is not just an obedient, dutiful son-in-law for Shilpa and Shamita's parents. As far as they're concerned, he's the son they never had. Raj, who misses his own family in London when he's in Mumbai, showers the Shetty’s with his attention. In fact, they now depend more on Raj than Shilpa for advice on family matters."

When Shilpa was planning a holiday with Raj in Spain for the New Year, it was he who suggested that Shilpa's parents accompany them. Says the friend, "Raj is very particular about family values. He insists that Shilpa and he alternate between their respective families for special occasions like Diwali and Christmas."

So when is the marriage?

"It's not that simple. We both need to sort out a lot of things before we settle down. But yes this relationship is for keeps. We're both very sure of each other," says the ever-honest Shilpa who in 2000 admitted she had her nose cosmetically chiselled.

20 murders a month and counting: Bangalore's new face

“If you are in Bangalore and are still alive, you must be grateful to the murderers who have let you live… at least for today. Safety and security deserted this place a long time ago. And to ask us if we expect Bangalore Police to keep us safe is ridiculous!” says Raghavendra, resident of Bangalore’s prestigious retirees’ paradise in Jayanagar, which is fast turning into a killers’ adda.

Is Bangalore safe? This is a question that must be dwelt upon by anyone who is connected in any way to this city. After becoming a soft target for the terrorists within a couple of years, the once exuberant Bangalore is today rapidly turning into a ‘great corridor of burglars and killers’.

On January 20, the dwellers of Jayanagar woke up to the news of the cold blooded murder of three women, all from the same family. The next day, Gayathri, 25, housewife, was found murdered in her apartment.

A quick look at the statistics is scary. Bangalore has seen no less than 20 murders in the first 21 days of the year, which means not a single day has gone by this year that has not brought in the news of spilt blood of the innocent. The body count for the New Year started with the murder of Muniraju, a money lender, on January 2. Later, the city shuddered in fear as 79-year-old Rangan and his 72-year-old wife Vasantha were found ruthlessly murdered in their house in Jayanagar. Thefts, killing for cash and jewelry, murder of women living on their own, murder for vengeance – all these have now become a routine in the city. Even the city police now seem to be quite fed up of these daily crimes, keeping in mind the pace at which Bangalore Police carry out the investigation. The cases, it appears, won’t be solved anytime soon.

Surprisingly, 20 murders even before the first month of 2009 is over does not rattle the Bangalore Police Commissioner Shankar M Bidari. “This is not a new thing. Bangalore usually witnesses over 20 murders every January and there is no need to create hue and cry over it. Moreover, if we compare it with last year’s statistics, there were more murders last year,” said Bidari.

For the Commissioner sahib, 20 murders in a month is not a serious matter, especially in a city with a population of 75 lakh and which has seen 22 and 19 murders in January 2008 and January 2007 respectively. Moreover, since police cannot guarantee security to each and every individual living in the city, the citizens themselves have to make sure they stay out of harm’s way, Bidari advised. Though the Police Commissioner has assured to start the investigations soon, the promise holds little hope. The file containing a 12-year-old murder case of an elderly couple in Jayanagar is still gathering dust in the police station. Though the police have already launched their investigation in the recent double and triple murder cases in Jayanagar, they give little assurance of safety and security to the residents.

“A peaceful sleep is all we ask for. Who will provide us security to enjoy that?” Raghavendra’s million dollar question hangs in the air.

B&E: What does food processing industry has in store for the Indian economy? PLK: Although the food processing industry is perceived to be a small scale industry, it is the only industry which has grown more than 15% on an average during the last three months and this is the period when the ongoing slowdown seems to have affected the Indian economy.

B&E: But, don’t we still process just 2% of the country’s annual production? PLK: Yes, compared to what we produce, we have not been able to process to that extent. At least 30% of our agri-production is wasted due to our inability to preserve and process. But we have abundant opportunity because, unlike other countries, we have our own production of fruits and vegetables.

B&E: So, what holds us back when it comes to capitalise on our agri-products and livestocks? PLK: Logistics and cold chains are definitely two major bottlenecks, which often stops a small scale entrepreneur from export. Then there are the multiple laws and sales taxes that varies from state to state and often force manufacturers to charge a higher cost on the finished product in the market. If you can’t offer competitive prices, you can not have an edge in the global market.

B&E: Where does India stands vis-à-vis Malaysia & China? PLK: The wide variety of land and climate enable us to harvest regular crops and then there are unique products like asparagus. Moreover, we are also organic by nature. These features definitely give us an edge over these countries.

With growing complexities in political arena and with increase in involvement of civil societies in governance, the role of referendum is ever increasing. It’s becoming the most sought-after form of direct democracy. Well, referendums not only depict the increasing legitimacy of decision-making but also enhances the political participation of citizens as well. But then, like normal elections, referendums are also largely abused in political arena. Last year, the Burmese generals went ahead with the constitutional referendum amidst the humanitarian crisis and asked the voters to either vote in the presence of them or hand over their ballots to the authorities. The voters were left with no option but to support the constitution. Even the French relied on the same method to decide on the establishment of constitution for Europe. And surprisingly 55% of voters rejected the treaty. Every time there was a need for a referendum, successive Croat Government executed the Croat referendum (about sovereignty related clauses) in various states during the Silence period and thus led to a serious violation of the rules and regulations that clearly defined that there should be no referendums during the Silence period. Likewise, when the Colombian referendum was held for the re-election of President Álvaro Uribe, a company named DMG donated 4.7 million pesos to influence the voting. The last and biggest on the list is the very recent incident wherein Venezuelan voters abolished term limits for Hugo Chavez and allowed him to continue the term all over again, going bluntly against the constitution which stipulated it to three terms only for any elected person.

Coming to the Indian banking sector, expect plenty of smirks from people in the American banking industry when you tell them how the Indian banking giant SBI has posted a 31.44% increase in profits for the period under consideration. Actually there is a positive correlation. Jagannadham Thunuguntla, Equity Head, SMC Capitals Limited, explains, “ As a matter of fact, post the Lehman Brothers episode, SBI saw deposits to the tune of Rs.10 billion every working day. Over the year, SBI, which had been maintaning a conservative approach towards branding, has now become aggressive and cornered the likes of ICICI Bank et al.” Size can become a burden for many, but SBI (with a mammoth 11,111 branches across India) does not seem to belong to that list by miles. SBI creditably showed a competitive streak when it became one of the first banks to slash interest rates and increase deposit rates following the RBI directive. According to V. Krishnan, Analyst, Ambit Capital Pvt. Ltd., “SBI recording huge profits can be primarily attributed to surge in its treasury profits and the higher bond prices... the key competitive advantage of SBI over its peers is its geographical reach.”

When I was little, growing up in a house that prominently displayed a blue-eyed Jesus and a blue-eyed JFK, I felt my brown eyes were far less attractive than my brothers’ blue ones. I obsessed on it so much, cutting out a picture of a beautiful brown-eyed model and keeping it in my scrapbook, that my mother finally reassured me: “You look at blue eyes. You look into brown eyes.” Later, of course, there would be the thrill of Van Morrison serenading a “Brown-Eyed Girl.”

Before Obama, when I interviewed the brown-eyed Mario Cuomo and Colin Powell, they seemed torn about taking the big plunge, given how far they had come in relation to their dads. I asked Cuomo if he was leaving the field to “the privileged blue-eyed WASPs” like Bush senior and Dan Quayle who felt entitled and never worried about their worthiness.

Obama and his family have already had a profound effect on the culture in terms of what is beautiful and marketable. Black faces are popping up in all kinds of ads now – wearing straw boaters and other prepster outfits in Ralph Lauren ads. With Michelle urging students to aim for A’s and Obama promising to make school “cool,” brown eyes may finally overtake blue as the windows of winners.

How religious leaders can help the world for its betterment

A close scrutiny exemplifies the fact that be it the Pope in Christianity or Dalai Lama in Buddhism, Rabbis in Judaism or Imams in Islam, religious leaders do all have implicit and explicit influences in the lives of even non-devotees.

To start off with, Pope Benedict XVI. Given the current global scenario, each of the Pope’s visits, addresses to the common people, official statements marks history. For instance, his mind-boggling address to the youths of Germany, inter-faith talks with Jews and Muslims and many other similar visits to Brazil, Austria, Poland, Spain, Turkey and the US have been overwhelmingly successful in garnering more international attention than his religious designation should warrant. His recent visit to Africa might have drawn some controversies due to his remarks on condoms as ‘not [being] the solution to end HIV/AIDS’, but what one misses is that his visit in itself helped Africa get enough attention from world authorities.

Even Angolan President Eduardo dos Santos, despite the Pope’s ‘condom-controversy’, had to accept, “We are very grateful for all the advice that you have given to our people.” Similarly, the Israeli chief Rabbi, Shlomo Amar, has contributed considerably by reaccepting the Falash Mura community – a group of Ethiopian Jews who converted to Christianity – and also fighting for the rights of non-Israeli immigrant Jews. Similarly, calls or addresses by Muslim leaders like the 49th Imam, Prince Karim Al Husseini or Imam of Jama Masjid remain very prominent. And the Dalai Lama’s politico-religious influence is in another seventh sphere already. Quite clearly, if with great power comes great responsibility, then would it be too churlish for us to comment that with great responsibility comes great duty? Towards global peace?

ah! but size does matter? So did you spot something common in all the deals mentioned above? Different countries, different sectors, different CEOs, different motives… Ah! All were multi-billion gambles! Our further research led us to many such references by M&A experts about the right size of deals. BCG’s sparkling May 2008 report once again proved a handful. The report documents that during downturns, “Larger deals destroy progressively more value! Deals that are above $1 billion destroy nearly twice as much value as those under $1 billion!” So what’s the right M&A deal size during a recessionary period? The reports prove how targets that are worth more than “50% of the acquirer destroy nearly twice as much value as targets that are worth less than 10% of the acquirer.” The work by Towers Perrin and Cass, that compared the current M&A fever, with the previous two cycles (that peaked in 1989 & 1999) also supports this theory. The paper confirms how “medium-sized deals (those between $0.4 and $1.5 billion) continued to work and create value.” So there you stand corrected – mid-sized risks are the recommendation for an M&A transaction, especially during a downturn when those dimes get more precious in the backdrop of the ‘On Sale’ once-lucrative businesses! Dr. Paroutis of Warwick Business School sums up his argument as, “The key to winning with this [M&A] strategy during a downturn, will be buying for a good price.” Karna of Grant Thornton doubles-up as, “Given capital is scarce... the downturns represent unprecedented opportunities for value buys…” So there’s the question again: should M&As be undertaken during recession?

Maybe. But ten years later, Kunal hasn’t exactly been the image of visionary leadership that he was when he started off. For he is the man who has also led Sony on the downtrodden path to a poor number four in the GEC category in the latter half of 2008. So where did this media maverick go wrong? “I think Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) should have never ever happened… because I had a chance to buy it but I felt a quiz format will not be that appealing to the audience. I refused it...”, is what Dasgupta himself admitted earlier to B&E. And that exactly was the turning point. In July 2000, KBC was launched on Star Plus along with K-packed soaps. Within months Star Plus became number one in the GEC category. Since then, Dasgupta has been on an erring spree and Sony kept falling on expectations. And as he started faltering, his fears of being replaced became stronger, with alarming consequences.

Cu Chi tunnels were the location of several military campaigns during the Vietnam War and are an immense network of underground tunnels. Vietnam sure casts a spell for its tourists with its astonishing military history, its monumental heritage, cultural grounding and breathtaking scenery.

As per the report on consumer spending titled ‘The Consensus World Outlook 2009’, real private consumption annual growth in India, after having fallen by 2.5% in 2008, is further forecasted to fall by another 0.4% in 2009! Mirroring past continuous falls, monthly consumer confidence in India also fell yoy by 22.4% in February 2009. But perhaps the most critical component in the Shoppers Stop saga is an innocuous issue pitting inhouse brands against external brands. While WalMart’s biggest success on managing cash flows comes from hosting a majority of inhouse brands, Shoppers Stop has 80% external brands. Today, Pantaloon’s and Westside’s growth and steady profits rotate around private labels, as 75% and 90% of their merchandise respectively is through in-house brands.

All in all, the fact is that Shoppers Stop does form an unmistakable historical pillar of India’s retail industry. The question is only about ‘how soon’, rather than ‘if’ Shoppers Stop can do it! Sam Walton, after suffering his first major business hit, wrote, “I had to pick myself up and get on with it, do it all over again, only even better this time...” Dear Nagesh, there’s your answer. Just do it better this time (and yes, throw me a call during the next discount campaign; I missed out this time).

“Reliance Fresh failed because it was too aggressive with its strategies and wanted to capture the entire market without leaving any space for the middlemen and local retailers,” points out a Mumbai-based retail specialist. Reliance had planned to establish its C&C business (which has attracted international big wigs like Walmart, Tesco, Carrefour, Metro AG, et al) in Tier-II cities. However, tough economic conditions demanded conservation of cash reserves, so that business was scrapped.

Winston Churchill had once said, “If you are going through hell, then keep going.” Indeed, Reliance must keep going, but wthout repeating the mistakes of its past. Quite logically, Reliance will have to cut the flab that it developed in such a short amount of time. The company is also mulling over international tie-ups for back-end support. That is a prudent strategy, which has served players like Bharti & Tata well. Outsourcing supply chain management is more cost effective and feasible, especially for a geographically scattered country like India.

The hit Facebook fad has seemed to catch on to all, young and old. If you’ve watched the movie, Mitr, you’ll know that there are circumstances in life which can make one resort to an alternate source of companionship, to which agrees Deepti, who has been married for seven years. “I have an account on Orkut and Facebook and there are times when I’ve added strangers from a common interest community to chat at times. Though I haven’t been attracted to anyone, it still, is addictive,” she giggles and adds that she wouldn’t find it surprising if someone gets intimate and perhaps even “romantically involved” through such sites. Priyanka, not a very net savvy woman, shares, “My husband is very fond of on-line chatting and keeps in touch with friends through Facebook. Sometimes, when he surfs for long hours, it makes me slightly insecure and although I shouldn’t, my mind still forces me to peep into his laptop and check on him!

Not surprisingly, the exits of family CEOs from family owned firms led to increases in operating performance, revenues, employment, stock value, but only if the new CEO being appointed was from outside the family! A fact vindicated a few years before in 2003 by the radical Pérez-González of Columbia Business School; and even by Professor Borokhovich of Cleveland University; and by Bath, Trygve, Schone of Institute of Social Research (Journal of Corporate Finance, 2005); Slovin (Louisiana University) and Sushka (Arizona University)... the list is so endless that it seems stupid to keep on repeating the same fact. Clearly, family firms not only should hire professional outside management at the top, but also need to most definitely ensure that the CEO is “NOT” appointed from the family.

On the personal front, this Raja of Raghogarh is said to be a man who tries painstakingly to keep his words. Talking about returning to Madhya Pradesh politics is like anathema to him. He is happy dispensing his duty as General Secretary of the party. Diggi Raja has command of important states like Uttar Pradesh apart from managing and planning election campaigns, yet he has his feet firmly on the ground. His baiters suggest that his engineering background affects his decision making. For example, he dwells so deeply in any problem that by the time he reaches to the conclusion, the problem loses its relevance. His crusade for poor and landless and plan for redistribution of untilled land made him deeply unpopular among the 'upper castes' in the state. Congress paid the price in 1998 elections. But one of his best friends and one time accomplice of Sanjay Gandhi, Mahesh Joshi, maintains that Singh has always been a man of integrity and that his dependence on bureaucrats dented his popularity.

Singh is also always ready to help everyone, even the people he doesn’t know personally. It is therefore not surprising that the father of Pragya Singh, one of the accused of Malegaon Blasts, has alleged that when Singh was CM, he tried to get her a job. Old habits die hard. Such beamers have troubled Singh from time to time, but he's far too experienced to let them bog him down.

They were judged by a jury, which comprised a mix of Indian and international personalities such as Karl Bardosh, Master Professor, Tisch School of Arts, NYU and the pioneer of these awards; Kurt Inderbitzin, Hollywood Film producer/director; Rahul Rawail, film director; Pankaj Prashar, film director; and Arun Anand, still photographer. The winners for the video films were All Elements of Hand – Ek Kavita by Sachin Sreshta and Mukti Krishnan as well as Rainwaters by Sachit Sadanandan; which won US $1,000 and US $500 respectively. While the first is a film that shows what a human can achieve with his or her hands, including surreal achievements like holding sunlight in one’s palm, the second is a film about rain water harvesting. The best award for a still photograph with a prize of US $500 went to Dead Carrier can Die too by Kamal Mahrishi that showed a discarded van from a morgue. The winning films will be screened at New York University – Tisch School of the Arts Theatre.
