Well, if you thought that the punishment to millions wasn’t worth the ‘allegation’ against one man, then you’re probably right. Forget about noble intentions, cases of a million people slaughtered in Rwanda or another 200,000 butchered in East Timor speak volumes about how much America under George Bush loved peace.

And what was the West doing then? What was the UN busy with? Remember the manner in which thousands of innocent people in West Timor were slughtered by the Indonesian army? Well, Washington provided arms for the same; after all Indonesia was Washington’s ally! What happened to Afghanistan? The whole country smashed to smithereens, and all because Americans needed an excuse to dispose off their old bomb shells! Were even the two and three year- olds guilty?! In short, humanitarian intervention can’t overpower geo-political interests of powerful nations; well, it hasn’t till now atleast!

Legalising sex trade is ridiculous and stinks of the highest order illogic

Legalising sex has always been one of the most controversial debates drawing attention. And before you infer your deductions about our allegiance, allow us to divulge that we, the vicarious intellectual variety, are supremely against such legalisation! For the supporters – who claim that legalising sex would better the lives of prostitutes – we wish to mention that sex workers, irrespective of legalities, are found to live a life of slavery, and are equally beaten up, tortured and oppressed as rape victims. In legal-prostitution countries, the meaning of sex trade becomes simple; sign a contract with a woman to rape her. When Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Australia and many other western countries legalised sex trade, they thought that it would make the State’s task easy – just to regulate and collect taxes – and state police could concentrate more on serious crimes. But things have turned expectably wrong. As per government statistics, there are almost 20,000 sex workers in Australia, where almost 80% experience severe sexual assaults and want to leave their occupation. The same is the case in New Zealand, UK, US, and other countries. A majority of Bangladeshis, Nepalese and Sri Lankan immigrants brought into India come against their will. From physical abuse [including enforced breast enlargement] to sodomy, the diverse torture on ‘legal’ or illegal sex workers seems similar across ‘intellectual’ nations.

Sweden has initiated penalising [by fining or imprisoning] clients who buy sex service from those who are in brothels against their will. UK, Wales are countries also considering the issue. Don’t get us wrong out here – or even right – but in case prostitution is finally made legal globally, would you then encourage your daughter or sister to join the same? There, you got your answer...

Donohue, President and CEO, US Chamber of Commerce, which represents over 3 million businesses, commented on what he felt should be Obama’s priorities, “Restoring the nation’s economic health must be our top priority. Any successful and sustainable recovery will involve the business sector, which creates the jobs, the growth, and the revenues on which all Americans and our government depend.” His mandate was: Get economy and business on its feet first; and then we can take care of controversial issues.

Needless to say, basking on the newfound reflected glory of M&C Saatchi globally, the Indian chief is quiet gung-ho on his creative team, which boasts of noted creative professionals like Amardeep Singh and Naren Kaimal, who quit their plush Dentsu jobs in November 2006, to join M&C Saatchi as Executive Creative Directors. Totally passionate about his agency, Kaimal explains the difference between other agencies and M&C Saatchi to 4Ps B&M, “I think one major difference is that because of our ‘Brutally Simple Thinking,’ we are totally media neutral and idea-centric. That, I think, is the major difference between us and any other agency.”

But being the devil’s advocate, isn’t the Indian advertising industry already cluttered with too many of too many? And does not recession have the potential to kill the goose before it even learns to fly? On the contrary, and in fact, the adrenalin levels of the key executives in the organisation are so high that M&C Saatchi is not at all worried about either being a small, new fish in the rather-cluttered Indian advertising pond, or about recession beating the pants off their growth plans. And their creativity continues unabated on the path of non-complexity.

Now it remains to be seen how effectively M&M uses its proven UV specialty and the new found avenues in green technology, international markets and military hardware. If convergence is the future, some kind of divergences are clearly needed. And that is exactly the kind of gameplan that telcos are adopting for their second innings. To be fair, far sighted players like Airtel, RCOM and Tata Teleservices have pro-actively added many of these new wings to their business spectrum. In fact, for Sunil Bharti Mittal, these new business lines have already started to contribute around one-fourth of total revenues. As a result, they have mitigated some of the future risks and ensured that their revenue stream continues moving upward without getting affected by increased competition, slowing subscriber growth and declining ARPUs.

What’s worrying is that others like Vodafone and Idea continue to bank on just their wireless business and are in no mood to shift gears – an affection which may prove fatal in the long run. While till recently, because of unavailability of spectrum, both these players had been unable to develop a pan-India presence like their counterparts, their mini steps toward diversification are far from comprehensive. To an extent, Vodafone is still looking at launching data cards and entering the enterprise segment, but Idea Cellular seems bullish only on wireless growth. When quizzed about their Plan B, Rajat Mukarji, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, IDEA Cellular, absolutely refused to acknowledge the need. “We are currently focused on developing a pan-India presence. Wireless will grow and we will continue working on this front for the time being.” Here’s hoping that this “idea” does not make them miss the bus sirji!

Firing is just a short-term solution

Wall Street isn't happy with Yahoo! and it's financials are to be blamed. Yahoo!'s net income during the third quarter fell to $54.3 million or 4 cents per share, marking a fall of 64.11% as compared to the same period a year back. And why should this be a rude shock to Wall Streeters? Well, even in the face of the current downturn, analysts had predicted that the IT major would return profits of 8 cents per share! So is Yahoo! planning a revival act?

The company announced its intentions to cut at least another 10% of its 15,000-strong global work force, therefore reduce its annual expense for 2008 by $400 million. It's macro-plan also includes selling-off real estate assets and moving employees to low-cost areas such as Eastern-Europe & Asia. Radical cuts alright, but do these steps also threaten to harm Yahoo!'s competitiveness?

Let's understand the reason behind the slump in Yahoo!'s bottomline. Inflated costs wasn't the problem; trouble was on the revenue front, and the reduction in big-ticket corporate advertisements on its websites across all of US, Europe and Asia is to be blamed. What makes the picture more dreadful is the fact that these job cuts would damage Yahoo!'s competitiveness as Jeff Kagan, IT Analyst agrees, “Yahoo should reinvent itself with better software and newer ideas that work better and easier and not cut talent.” Thus clearly, this is a tough time for Yahoo! and the others in the IT ranks. But simple cost-cutting guarantees no bright bottomline, or sustained online future!

Demagogue lambasts outsourcing

Obama’s off shoring rant only seems to be another political gimmick

Democracies have known that demagoguery helps to win elections. So is the caveat for preventing outsourcing jobs to India by Democrat Presidential candidate Barrack Obama merely a rhetoric? That’s what the feedbacks from within the Indian industry reflects. “It’s like threatening a man that his horns will be taken off. A man does not have horns in the first place,” says a champion of the IT-Enabled Services (ITES) sector in India. He declined to be named for it might have hampered his relationship with his US-based business partners. “If there is any tax benefit that the companies which outsource enjoy, I am not aware of them,” argues Raman Roy, CEO of Quatrro BPO solutions.

Outsourced jobs in India extend to sectors beyond IT. Healthcare, manufacturing, media, publishing and entertainment; you name it and the Indians do it for the Americans. NASSCOM President Som Mittal has already said that if outsourcing jobs at all get affected in future, they will not be in the IT sector. 'Insourcing’ of jobs (that’s outsourcing for Obama) does not remain a business ‘option’ for India anymore. It’s a pillar of the economic success that the country has scripted. Revenue from the IT-BPO sector alone in India is expected to reach $75 billion by 2010. Out of a total of 2 million knowledge professionals in India now, a total of 1.5million are employed in export oriented industries.

Can the Americans stop buying Chinese products too? The only way to stop outsourcing is a legislation, which would be against free trade, the very symbol for which US is recognised. Confused as politicians are globally, even Obama accepts that the outsourcing process is irreversible. He admits, "Outsourcing has helped American companies stay competitive." So whose side is he on? Just wait till he becomes President, if at all!
