There are tremendous expectations from the new Kadima Chief; will she be a hawk or a dove?

In an election that may well decide what kind of news will we be reporting from west Asia in days to come, Tzipi Livni, Israel's outgoing Foreign Minister won the election for the head of Kadima Party and has started political manoeuvres to set pieces for the coalition government that she will lead as a Prime Minister. As final results were announced this weekend, Livni narrowly edged out her closest rival, Shaul Mofaz, the hawkish Transport Minister in Olmert’s government, by 431 votes. While Livni polled 43.1% of the popular vote, Mofaz had to contend with 42%. Nearly all the Exit Polls predicting a sweep for Livni proved wide of the mark.

A wafer thin margin is only first of several problems that Livni confronts. Her party, Kadima, has merely 29 seats in the 120-seat Knesset and in all probability, will need support from Labour Party that has 19 seats as well as other marginal parties, including the ultra-orthodox Shas, and the left-wing Meretz. Needless to say, even by the standards of the bedlam that Israel’s internal politics is, it will be a tough deal for Livni, whose own allegiance & ideology has changed several times during her brief career as a politician.

There is something peculiar about the two wheeler industry in India that has dented many reputations. Once upon a time, Rajdoot and then Yamaha were the vehicles that the Nanda family of Escorts rode to spectacular success. They are gone. The Royal Enfield or the Bullet has looked like a white elephant that even Eicher Motors struggled to keep plugging. The Lohias of LML came with a bang in the early 1980s to challenge the then two wheeler king Rahul Bajaj and are hardly talked of anymore now. Back in the 80s, it looked for a moment as if Venu Srinivasan of TVS, who had a joint venture with Suzuki, might challenge the Bajaj supremacy. He is still trying valiantly. Then you had the Kinetic Honda that took the Indian market by storm for a while. In the end, it was Hero Honda whose challenge mattered to the point where it even nudged out Bajaj as the numero uno. And, despite the best efforts of Rajiv Bajaj, it remains number one.

And yes, here is a nugget if you had forgotten that Bajaj was after profit margins and not bothered about the bottom of the pyramid. The net profit to sales margin of Bajaj declined from 11.63% in the second quarter of 2007-08 to 8.67% in the same quarter this year. At Hero Honda, the net profit margin rose from 7.8% to 9.4%. QED...

If only Salvador Dali had changed the hues and appearance of his popular painting, ‘Melting Clocks’, to ‘melting chocolate clocks’, and had dipped his brush in chocolate aroma oil instead of colours, any chocoholic (including your’s truly) would have grabbed it at the first opportunity... not only to devour it with the eyes and savour the aroma, but more for avoiding the calories that real chocolate comes with!

Since Dali isn’t alive to do us the favour, Mars – the great confectionary company that gave the world its share of masterpieces like Snickers, Mars, Twix, M&Ms and much more – seems godsent here. ‘Making the world sweeter’ since 1911, Mars is now set to wipe out the ‘dark’ side of chocolates – artificial colours, flavourings and preservatives – from all its chocolate bars.

Well, in reality, going all natural and low-calorie isn’t the wisdom of these confectioners, but is rather the pressure that has built up after the results of the Southampton study came to the forefront. The scientific study concluded that these artificial additives in chocolates and other confectionary items are responsible for heightening hyperactivity and other behavioural problems in children. While many others like Cadbury’s have followed suit, Mars had been proactive by working on it since 2006. And 2008 end is when all the additives from Starburst, M&M and Skittles would be removed. And for the chocoholic’s delight, the company has introduced dark chocolates considering that more amount of cocoa reduces blood pressure and prevents cardiovascular diseases. Although it’s kind of late for this revelation to strike, it wasn’t for nothing that the Mayans and Aztecs worshipped the cacao tree (from where cocoa comes) and considered its pods as divine gifts. And now it seems that we’re treading back the same track by adopting the same bitter taste and flavour of that chocolate drink (first edible form of cocoa) savoured by the Aztecs before Hernán Cortés brought it to Spain. From then onwards sugar, milk, cream, additives, preservatives, colours etc. were eventually added to experiment with its taste. The taste did improve with every add-on but their unhealthy aspects outweighed cacao beans’ healthy attributes.

But the US had/has dwarfed perhaps both of them with their ‘Shock and Awe’ strategy with the annihilation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan eventually conceded defeat. With time, names changed but the resonance of the doctrines of Blitzkrieg, Kamikaze and ‘shock and awe’ still make their presence felt every now and then. With the dropping of the two atom bombs on August 6 and August 9, 1945, by the B-29 Superfortress bombers, the superiority of the Air force in warfare was established. It brought in the new concept as to how a war can be won and an invincible enemy can be brought down on its knees from a height of 40,000 feet without even putting a foot on the ground just as the Germans had baptised the indispensability of the submarine, which had almost won the war for the Germans. Wish Napoleon had the same luck.

The end of the Second World War was also the beginning of the biggest polarisation that the world had ever seen. The Berlin Wall put the final stamp on the clear demarcation between the Western Capitalist Bloc and the Eastern Soviet Bloc and it was the green signal of the beginning of a 40 year long Cold War. This era saw a flurry of activities in literally carrying forward the legacy of Second World War [without actually fighting the real war] and perhaps bettering it. At times, with the world remaining with the constant fear of an impending war, many felt that it would perhaps do a whole lot of good to fight it out once and for all. But that did not happen. What happened, instead, was the constant upgradation of weapon systems and their delivery mechanism. So while B-29 bombers gave way to the colossal B-52 [powered by eight engines] and TU-142 type long range bombers and later TU-160, [which could travel half the earth, bomb a place and then comfortably come back] in response came the era of interceptor aircraft, the foremost and the pioneer among them being the ubiquitous and the ever versatile Soviet made Mig- 21. In fact, since the end of the Second World War, two of the biggest revolutions in warfare have been pioneered by the Russians. If one of them is the Mig-21, which forced the Americans to think of stealth, dogfights and supersonic bombers, the invention of the AK-47 by Mikhail Kalashnikov changed the very paradigm of the foot soldier. Probably no other fighter aircraft or assault rifle has been made in so many variants by so many countries as has been in the case of Mig-21 & AK-47. The whole era of Cold War is imbibed with several instances of Soviet Tu-142 being intercepted and escorted out of the Western territory by US or British interceptors like the F-102 Delta, F-106, F-14, or Tornado.

One of the most successful lobbying case studies is the extravagant and gigantic network of Israeli lobbyists that includes everyone from renowned think-tanks, newspapers to active lobbyist organisations like American Israeli Public Affairs Committee [AIPAC]. The results talk for themselves. Researches show that Israel obtained popular US support in over 55% of ‘issues’ while Arabs or Palestinians have achieved support in less than 10% in the last 40 years.

On another front, it is due to lobbying that notorious President Omar Bongo of the Gabon, who is criticised for some of the worst human rights violations in history, had a successful meeting with Bush. It is claimed that Bongo paid $9 million to Jack Abramoff, a famous lobbyist, to ‘fix’ the meeting. When Malaysia intended to refurbish its tainted image, the then controversial PM Mahathir Mohamed paid $1.2 million to get a date with Bush; while Pakistan has spent $1.1 million in 2008 on lobbying for trade support. India is also not behind in the league, paying almost $2.5 million to the famous lobbying firm BGR and $291,665 to Patton Boggs for influencing the nuclear deal.

So the question is, should lobbying be considered illegal, or even unethical? Our take is quite to the contrary. Lobbying firms act quite like PR firms, upping the ante where normal tier diplomacy fails. As long as lobbying does not tread the realms of illegalities [giving bribes, gifts, favours et al] and simply markets a concept better, we guess judges can continue keeping their bath robes on. Well, it’s worked for India pretty well in the past. And hey, before we forget, a live turkey always makes it to the White House every year on Thanksgiving Day for what lobbyists call the ‘annual pardon’.

It is a fact that the 20th century started with unprecedented optimism amidst a wave of globalisation.

Already, there are dribbles of information about workers violently protesting against job losses and against rampant corruption of party officials. Already, Chinese leaders are displaying signs of extreme nervousness. Just read the following statement issued by the Central Military Commission of China where it orders the military to “uncompromisingly obey the Party and Central Military Commission’s command at any time and under any circumstances”. Now, why would Hu Jintao and his colleagues, who unquestionably rule China and control the military need to issue such a statement; and that too emphasising, “at any time and under any circumstances.” Surely, they must be aware of reality a lot better than the media! The reason for nervousness at the top is a little known document called ‘Charter 08’ that was published in December 2008 by a group of courageous – some might say foolhardy – Chinese. The charter is a 3,000 word powerful document signed by 300 citizens who live inside China. It openly calls for more personal and political freedom, the holding of free and fair elections, and the dismantling of Communist party rule and control over the military. Hours before the charter was posted online in December 2008, democracy activist and co-author of the Charter, Liu Xiaobo was arrested by the Chinese authorities. The houses of all other signatories were raided and the Chinese State prefers to have the world think that the Charter doesn’t exist.

Such ruthless authoritarianism is dangerous because it eventually leads to an explosion of unrest. But more dangerous is the possibility that the Communist Party and the State might stoke extreme ‘nationalism’ to divert people’s anger towards ‘other’ targets like Japan and Taiwan. The Pakistani military and State has been successfully doing it for more than six decades! God forbid if tens of millions of Chinese march across cities demanding that Taiwan be absorbed into China with military force. Or if similar hordes march demanding revenge against Japan. In fact, the disturbing face of Chinese nationalism targeted at Japan was starkly visible in 2005 when hundreds of thousands of citizens demanded an apology from Japan for atrocities committed during the Second World War. More disturbing was China openly saying it will invade Taiwan if necessary. It is a fact that the 20th century started with unprecedented optimism amidst a wave of globalisation. But the rise of Germany and Japan as extremely authoritarian states led to two World Wars. India and China will rise in the early decades of the 21st century. Care to bet who can spoil the party?

Chee too was swept off her feet by the man’s wit and charm. Her good old Pizza now seemed bland and boring. Soon enough, they broke up. Nothing happened between her and The Rajput though. He was happily married to another multi-course platter. Chee came across other seven-course dazzlers though, but couldn’t hang on to these broncos. While Chee is a real person, I’m sure we all know someone like her, maybe in the next cubicle, maybe across the dining table, maybe you see her in the mirror everyday. Here’s what you can do if you’re like.

Chee: Ma’am, you might read up books which promise to help you ‘find the one you want’, but that isn’t your problem. Your problem is hanging on to that one and that, if he is a multi-course charmer, while you remain a single course, uncomplicated angel, is virtually impossible. Multi-coursers like complications. They need to pray at the altar of a demanding goddess in order to feel fulfilled every day. But you, if you don’t mind my saying so, are a tad too simple. He’ll get bored and you’ll tire of keeping up with him. Your options? You’ve got two. A) You’re a wonderful as you are. Around you, there are great single-course guys, both sincere and giving (virtues you embody) and all you have to do is open your eyes to them and you’ll see them… waiting. B) If you’re smitten by the multi-course bug and can’t resist the magnetic charms of their undeniably exciting world view, you’ll have to change, and that’ll take work. You need to change your value system and really ‘step out’. Make it a point to constantly challenge yourself with new experiences. It could take years and as you gain new attributes, you might lose all that you hold dear today. Reinvention demands both surrender and sacrifice – it wouldn’t be easy; it mightn’t even be right, but hey, follow your heart, and I’ll wish you luck. Chee’s Pizza: Feel sorry for you, buddy. You’ve did nothing wrong but yes, you should’ve felt the tug when she started drifting away. You have the same options too – remain true to who you are and give up on love, for now, but do make a conscious effort to keep evolving (as against drifting) along the planes of your uncomplicated single-course psyche. Or, you too could follow Chee and hopefully find your feet in multi-course country.

The Rajput and his ilk: Tread carefully! Don’t promise more than you can deliver in such a relationship. Once sure of your mutual incompatibility, warn her off and be honest. She’ll thank you for saving her a heartbreak and you would’ve won a friend for life.
