One more hit and trial method

Abortion is banned in India since 1971। But like many other tooth-less laws in our country, abortion is going on rampant in broad daylight under the nose of law enforcing authorities, who are sitting duck to this raging foeticide and infant mortality। Recently, a law was passed by the government (ideated Renuka Chowdhury) wherein it was made compulsory for pregnant women to register with the government medical departments. One reason for such a step is the falling gender ratio in the last decade (by about 2%). This law has been framed to reduce illegal and needless abortions cases and reduce female foeticide. While the law has an extension clause that permits an abortion under some specific circumstances, quite mysteriously nothing has been mentioned in details of such clauses. It is imperative for the policy makers to realise that the real malaise is not with abortion but with pre-natal sex determination technology that is easily available. While the new law in essence is justified but it is important to make sure that it does not end up creating needless impediments for deserving abortions while letting prejudice based abortions pass through the loopholes. Nevertheless, our eagerness for banning abortions should not end up in fuelling population explosion.

India’s perennial dependence on Public Distribution System & NREGA (National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) for poverty alleviation continues, the relentless corruption and historical evidence proving their worthlessness notwithstanding. According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, every year, almost 53.3% of wheat & 39% of rice meant for PDS, finds its way into the illegal market. The much hyped about NREGA scheme is also executed on the same lines. A recent survey by Centre for Environment and Food Security (CEFS) reveals that out of Rs.733 crores spent under NREGA in Orissa, more than Rs.500 crores (almost 75%) has been embezzled by government officials. Moreover, only 26% (Rs.500 crores) of allocated funds (Rs.890 crores) were spent. Most of the job cards were fabricated which led to unemployment for a million poor families. Adding to the misery of these unfortunates, more than 205 projects out of 240 projects under the preview of NREGA in Simdega district of Jharkhand are still on hold.

The problem has never been with funds but with the right kind of application of such funds. Even decentralisation and involving the panchayats didn’t yield the results, except that the panchayat members often end up having five storey mansions. Now how about bidding adieu to the trodden lines and trying options like outsourcing the works of rural development to private entities? After all, e-choupal has been a blockbuster

Reddy has played a phenomenal role in transforming the scenario of healthcare in India. The year was 1983 and Dr। Reddy was then doing his own private practice in Bangalore। The idea for Apollo Hospitals came after he lost a heart patient who couldn’t make it to Texas for an open heart surgery। This became the keystone of Apollo. “At that point of time, certain operations where not available in the country and not all can afford to go abroad. Can the declining wholesale price index beat the rise in crude oil?

If the Indian bourses have been displaying their resilience to withstand the onslaught of global downturn, then the inflations rates, too, are not lagging far behind in re-enforcing the confidence in Indian economy.

The most refreshing news in the pre-Diwali session was that the wholesale price index was at 2।97% for the week ended Oct. 27, down from 3.02% in the previous week. But the big question, which continues to haunt the economic strategists is – for how long will the inflation levels sustain at below 3-4% mark? With the international crude oil prices hovering close to $100 a barrel & the government vacillating on passing the burden on to the consumers – the prospects are not very bright. Sooner or later the oil prices in the country will go up pushing the cost of commodities to higher levels. With the food, fertilizer & oil subsidies slated to touch $25 billion this year, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has already hinted at restructuring the subsidy regime, “so that only the really needy and the poor benefit from them and leakages are stopped.” With these thoughts floating in the policy making circles, it is not difficult to presume that something surely is in the offing on oil price front. It is increasing becoming difficult for government to sustain current subsidy levels both on kerosene and cooking gas. The short honeymoon with below 3% inflation rate is likely to end soon, making Goddess Lakshmi vanish from Indian homes after Diwali.

Airbus has chosen five Bangalore based private firms to become its Tier-1 suppliers.

When it comes to sourcing components from India, there is no love lost between the two majors. Both have willy-nilly chosen Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL). For example, HAL supplies 50% of A320 doors to Airbus, and its order book is full for the next year with a backlog of about 5,000 doors. Airbus has chosen five Bangalore based private firms to become its Tier-1 suppliers. It claims that 1,110 engineers from Bangalore have worked with it on live projects; 100 engineers worked on the A380 project. Says Enders, “The partnerships are now moving from parts manufacturing to IT, ITeS, engineering & R&D, besides traditional sub assemblies.”

How’s Boeing combating Airbus’ initiatives? Phantom Works, Boeing’s R&D arm, is exploring opportunities for partnerships with National Aerospace Laboratory on wind tunnel technologies and Indian Institute of Technology on RFID. For those who thought that Airbus’ HAL contract was the first of its kind, here’s a surprise. Boeing already has a contract for single-handedly supplying its B757’s exit doors and the landing gear up-block boxes for B777. And this affair with HAL has lasted 16 years.

Here’s a further confirmation that the two aircraft makers will never give each other a chance to steal the thunder from under their feet. Airbus has entered into partnerships with Wipro, Infosys, TCS, Aetos, HCL Technologies, i2 Technologies, & Satyam for various engineering and/or IT services co-operation. And Boeing is working with India’s top IT forces – including Wipro, Infosys & TCS – on several projects like systems re-engineering, long-term application maintenance et al.

We’d heard about them... Then we met them!

It’s a jump few attempt – from being an employee to an entrepreneur. 4Ps B&M’s pawan chabra analyses new-age Indian ‘employeepreneurs’

When Fortune documented in January 2008 how a bunch of 13 employees of Google quit their jobs to set up their individual entrepreneurship firms, the news didn’t raise many eyebrows. Well, the West always had gazillions of cases of employees turning into entrepreneurs; the surprising part now is, ‘employeepreneurs’ have just started showing up in bigger numbers closer to home too!

Drawing up on the numerological charm might have been topmost in the mind of Pramath Raj Sinha, Founder and Managing Director, 9.9 Mediaworx, when he inaugurated the company on the 9th day of September (but of course, the 9th month) last year! Not many know that Sinha was the first Dean of a business school we know famously as the Indian School of Business.

It was only after spending around 14 years in the ‘employee’ world that Sinha came out with a plan to start something on his own growing out of his own past experiences. 9.9 Mediaworx deals with research, offshoring, niche print magazines, and even television & filmed entertainment! “There are people in the industry who cannot think of a magazine less than a circulation of one lakh or cannot think of anything other than a news channel targeting mass,” opines Sinha explaining his niche focus, “There is still a lot of room to grow in the traditional and modern media in India!” And Sinha’s gone about this like clockwork, acquiring the famed Jasubhai Digital Media – a classic case of a startup acquiring a 40 year old!

If Sinha’s on a niche war-path, not far behind is Jignesh Maniar, once the Creative Director at O&M, who quit the agency to start his own venture – an advertising agency called ‘ON’ – which “doesn’t” wish to get big clients! “ON will target the mid-sized clients who are often ignored at big agencies, and the client base has a huge potential to bank upon,” confidently spouts Jignesh. But what was the killing reason to jump into the ‘employeepreneurs’ club? “The booming economy and the available opportunities made me start on my own,” divulges Jignesh.

And if you thought that the fast growing specialty eye care company EYEQ belonged to a multinational, we should share that its founder and current MD, Rajat Goel, started this chain in March 2007 after he’d quit running his 16-year mile in the global behemoth Bausch & Lomb. While working in Bausch & Lomb, Rajat knew that there was a huge opportunity in specialised eye-care, especially in the rural and semi-urban areas of India; and thus was born EYEQ. How well was the concept received in these segments? Rajat confessed to 4Ps B&M, “When I started with the venture, at one point of time, I felt that it may fail completely!” But as the most boring cliche of the business world goes, fortune favours the brave! And fortune did favour Rajat, who now “plans to open a total of 100 hospitals in the next three years with a turnover of over Rs. 200 crores!”

The IMRB head-honchos seemed clear that “more than the celeb pull, factors like quality, price and experience ultimately drove consumers purchasing pattern.”

In the men’s zone, superhero Hrithik Roshan remains hot as ever with Acer, John Players, Parle, Tata Sky, Sony Ericsson, Radico Khaitan… up next is the rockin’ Chhote Nawab, Saif Ali Khan with Taj Mahal tea, Royal Stag, Yamaha, Newport, Colgate, Lenovo, Aveo… Then there is Akki, with Grasim Suitings, Thums Up, Microsoft Xbox 360. And about the Big B and SRK, (bulging with endorsements), who doesn’t know?

All these glitzy and glamorous endorsements are, undoubtedly, wonderfully rewarding for the stars and hugely rewarding for the insatiable (can’t have enough!) star-hungry TV viewers. But, at the end of the day, does it do anything for the clients’ products advertised? Remember the (ageing) yesteryears dream girl Hema Malini hawking mineral water Kent RO and (would you believe it) – Bank of Rajasthan!

Where on earth is the remotest connect or credibility, for chrissake? Equally weird is hi-profile lyricist Javed Akhtar endorsing Jaypee Cement! Bips and real estate? The Big B and Navratna hair oil? Naseer Shah and Om Puri doing equally crazy stuff? Admittedly, for the star its mega-bucks in double-quick time (with Mallika Sherawat reportedly netting a staggering Rs.3.5 crore for an ad campaign!) but what about the poor sucker who doles out the dough?

No humming and hawing any more. The Jury is out. A new survey conducted jointly by IMRB & IPAN reveals some startling facts. Conducted with a sample size of over 2000 respondents, across 12 cities (small and big metros). 86% of those interviewed admitted that the ad that they most remembered had a celeb, but only 3% said it influenced their buying decision. The IMRB head-honchos seemed clear that “more than the celeb pull, factors like quality, price and experience ultimately drove consumers purchasing pattern.” Further, “only 22% of this sample believes that the celebs actually use the products endorsed. In the South, the figure is even lesser, 13%!”

Monica Oswal is using her Monte Carlo method to make a cool fashion statement in summers too!

Before she even started her corporate journey,

Born in the Oswal family, Monica was trained by her father – industrialist J. L. Oswal. Before she even started her corporate journey, she was equipped with a strong business acumen. “We have been learning from our childhood and much before I took charge of Monte Carlo, I knew what the brand was all about and what positioning I have to do,” reminisces Monica. Unique pricing, supported by massive penetration and then giving a global touch to the brand acted brilliantly. Affirms Monica, “I tried to maintain the USP of a global brand image. Besides, compared to other players, we had an edge of providing pure wool. Today, we provide the raw material for most foreign woolen brands that you see.”

Here’s one lady that firmly believes in doing proper homework and slowly testing the waters before committing to anything big. She says that this attitude toward the brand has enabled Monte Carlo to attain complete manufacturing independence. Explains Monica, “From the beginning to the end, the entire processing has been done by us. So when I wanted to venture into the summer market, we wanted to have everything of our own. For the first two-three years we tested the market, had our own production house and now we are going to launch it more massively with proper branding,” she says, talking of the Monte Carlo summer wear range.

For now, the charming lady is planning to take brand Monte Carlo to other Asian countries and is trying her level best to mint maximum moolah from the summer wear market. She wants to put paid to the myth that Monte Carlo only means woolens and is pretty optimistic that her team will deliver. Is it easy to keep the team motivated? “We are very liberal as far as leadership is concerned and are open to all the options with consultation attitude,” affirms Monica. That apart, this dynamic leader also believes that an ideal manager should be a good visionary too. “A good leader will have to be good visionary, have clear values in life and should be able to take decisions quickly. And my ideal leader is my father,” she smiles.

Of course she has a hectic schedule, but given that her favourite past time is spending time with the family, how does she manage to juggle her time? “By balancing my schedule and keeping away my personal life from my professional life,” replies Monica, the mother of a pretty daughter. Gentle, but smart and determined, that’s Monica Oswal for you. And her fixation these days is to make Monte Carlo a one stop brand with a large presence in the accessories segment also. Her earlier track record says that she can achieve what she believes in. Let’s hope we are saying the same thing, when summers come to an end.
