Born in the Oswal
family, Monica was trained by her father – industrialist J. L. Oswal. Before she even started her corporate journey, she was equipped with a strong business acumen. “We have been learning from our childhood and much before I took charge of Monte Carlo, I knew what the brand was all about and what positioning I have to do,” reminisces Monica. Unique pricing, supported by massive penetration and then giving a global touch to the brand acted brilliantly. Affirms Monica, “I tried to maintain the USP of a global brand image. Besides, compared to other players, we had an edge of providing pure wool. Today, we provide the raw material for most foreign woolen brands that you see.”
Here’s one lady that firmly believes in doing proper homework and slowly testing the waters before committing to anything big. She says that this attitude toward the brand has enabled Monte Carlo to attain complete manufacturing independence. Explains Monica, “From the beginning to the end, the entire processing has been done by us. So when I wanted to venture into the summer market, we wanted to have everything of our own. For the first two-three years we tested the market, had our own production house and now we are going to launch it more massively with proper branding,” she says, talking of the Monte Carlo summer wear range.
For now, the charming lady is planning to take brand Monte Carlo to other Asian countries and is trying her level best to mint maximum moolah from the summer wear market. She wants to put paid to the myth that Monte Carlo only means woolens and is pretty optimistic that her team will deliver. Is it easy to keep the team motivated? “We are very liberal as far as leadership is concerned and are open to all the options with consultation attitude,” affirms Monica. That apart, this dynamic leader also believes that an ideal manager should be a good visionary too. “A good leader will have to be good visionary, have clear values in life and should be able to take decisions quickly. And my ideal leader is my father,” she smiles.
Of course she has a hectic schedule, but given that her favourite past time is spending time with the family, how does she manage to juggle her time? “By balancing my schedule and keeping away my personal life from my professional life,” replies Monica, the mother of a pretty daughter. Gentle, but smart and determined, that’s Monica Oswal for you. And her fixation these days is to make Monte Carlo a one stop brand with a large presence in the accessories segment also. Her earlier track record says that she can achieve what she believes in. Let’s hope we are saying the same thing, when summers come to an end.
