On the personal front, this Raja of Raghogarh is said to be a man who tries painstakingly to keep his words. Talking about returning to Madhya Pradesh politics is like anathema to him. He is happy dispensing his duty as General Secretary of the party. Diggi Raja has command of important states like Uttar Pradesh apart from managing and planning election campaigns, yet he has his feet firmly on the ground. His baiters suggest that his engineering background affects his decision making. For example, he dwells so deeply in any problem that by the time he reaches to the conclusion, the problem loses its relevance. His crusade for poor and landless and plan for redistribution of untilled land made him deeply unpopular among the 'upper castes' in the state. Congress paid the price in 1998 elections. But one of his best friends and one time accomplice of Sanjay Gandhi, Mahesh Joshi, maintains that Singh has always been a man of integrity and that his dependence on bureaucrats dented his popularity.

Singh is also always ready to help everyone, even the people he doesn’t know personally. It is therefore not surprising that the father of Pragya Singh, one of the accused of Malegaon Blasts, has alleged that when Singh was CM, he tried to get her a job. Old habits die hard. Such beamers have troubled Singh from time to time, but he's far too experienced to let them bog him down.

They were judged by a jury, which comprised a mix of Indian and international personalities such as Karl Bardosh, Master Professor, Tisch School of Arts, NYU and the pioneer of these awards; Kurt Inderbitzin, Hollywood Film producer/director; Rahul Rawail, film director; Pankaj Prashar, film director; and Arun Anand, still photographer. The winners for the video films were All Elements of Hand – Ek Kavita by Sachin Sreshta and Mukti Krishnan as well as Rainwaters by Sachit Sadanandan; which won US $1,000 and US $500 respectively. While the first is a film that shows what a human can achieve with his or her hands, including surreal achievements like holding sunlight in one’s palm, the second is a film about rain water harvesting. The best award for a still photograph with a prize of US $500 went to Dead Carrier can Die too by Kamal Mahrishi that showed a discarded van from a morgue. The winning films will be screened at New York University – Tisch School of the Arts Theatre.

FDI: China habitually gets more than $150 billion in foreign direct investments every year. As a percentage of GDP, it hovers between 7% to 10%. In sharp contrast, Indian policy makers start whooping with joy when FDI crosses $20 billion. Not to mention that FDI has almost never exceeded even 0.5% of GDP. Now, we all know that foreign investments will dry up. But since most of India’s GDP growth has been driven by domestic investment, we will be the least adversely affected. Let’s say FDI inflow declines by a whopping 50% or about $10 billion. That works out to one-tenth of one percent of GDP. Do your own maths!

EXPORTS: There are horror stories floating around of how hundreds of thousands of jobs are being lost because exports are slowing down and declining. A recent government survey says that half a million jobs were lost in the last quarter of 2008 because of contracting exports. Half a million jobs gone is bad news indeed. But compare that with an admission by the Chinese government (A government that is loathe to admit anything!) that 20 million jobs were lost in the same period and you suddenly get a fresh perspective on where India stands compared to other nations. Also remember, exports from India still hover around 15% of GDP, one of the lowest figures among major economies in the world.

However, there is a third point of view. Nepali journalist Khimi Thapa, for instance, feels there is nothing really wrong with a merger if it is done in a broad based manner. As Thapa pointed out to B&E, the Maoist government almost never bothered to take the Army Chief into confidence before coming up with the proposal. “This is the root of the tension that persists between the government and the NA,” said Thapa; adding that it was no mean task to integrate the PLA’s 19,000 combatants with the NA.

The NA is not at all certain that the merger will take place in accordance with internationally recognised norms. The army is especially against the PLA commanders’ move to retain their ranks and want their own guerrilla chief, Nanda Kishore Pun 'Pasang'. With so much going against it, the government would do better to backtrack on its proposal till a consensus is reached.

Their November 2001 hallmark paper (Why Mergers Fail) stated prophetically, “The belief that mergers drive revenue growth could be a myth!” In that paper, McKinsey showed how a massive 78% of companies failed to manage significant growth over a period of three years post the M&A! Professors Weber and Camerer of Carnegie Mellon University, in April 2003, statistically showed in their benchmark thesis (Merger Failure...) that “a majority of corporate mergers fail!” The Economist reported in 1999,“Study after study has shown that 2/3rd of all deals haven’t worked!” CEO Magazine reported similarly, “75% of M&As are disappointing or outright failures!” BCG’s sparkling July 2007 report, The Brave New World of M&As, documents, “Larger deals destroy progressively more value!... Deals that are above $1 billion destroy nearly twice as much value as those under $1 billion!” The hugely referenced Business Strategy Review‘s 2005 paper (Merging on the Miraculous) had the first line, “More than 2/3 M&As fail to create meaningful shareholder value.” The Gartner/Forbes Executive Survey of February 2007 asked top global executives to rank various business issues. ‘Managing M&As’ came last on the 25 factor list! Factors like ‘Attracting and retaining skilled workers’, ‘attracting new customers’, ‘Increasing market share’ etc. were ranked miles above M&As!

All said and done, Obama will have to certainly move away from rhetoric now and focus on pragmatism. Reality bites hard when it does. Take his tax policy for instance. An analysis by the Tax Policy Center estimates that without cuts in government spending, Obama’s overall tax plan would increase the national debt to around $3 trillion (including interest costs) by 2018! And outsourcing of services and manufacturing is an instrument of competitiveness; discouraging it would only make America Inc. more uncompetitive. Also, his rhetoric on promoting more green business in the US is noble; but it’s not an easy horse to ride; and can’t take priority over the economy as of now.

You can’t overstate the fact that Obama stands for quite a lot – his election is the fruition of Martin Luther King’s dreams of a promised land; and an ode to Abraham Lincoln’s legendary endeavours to end slavery in US back in the 19th century. But now it’s time for Obama to read Roosevelt far more than Lincoln. The promise of change got him this far, but the challenges ahead are very, very different

But why should the CNG focus be increased dramatically?

Strangely, in their search for alternative fuels, auto manufacturers are not giving due importance to the most important of quasi-alternative fuels, that is, compressed natural gas (CNG), which, in fact, is a fossil fuel only! CNG is environmentally a cleaner alternative to traditional petroleum products, with fuel efficiency equaling that provided by diesel engines. But why should the CNG focus be increased dramatically? Because countries like India, where the auto markets are expected to have the hugest potential, have extremely large and cheap CNG resources.

A report by the Global Environment Facility of UNDP on India’s Coal Bed Methane (CBM) extraction potential states, “It is estimated that in India, the largest coal producer in the world, there are around 20,000 square kilometers of area where CBM capture could be carried out; the country’s recoverable methane reserves are 800 billion cubic metres, with a gas production potential of 105 million cubic metres a day over 20 years.” Compare this with Saudi Arabia’s daily production of oil, which stands at only (relatively) 9.5 million barrels a day. Makes sense? Not perhaps to the global auto industry.

In case the jargon is intimidating, the explanations are not. Financial institutions lent money to sub-prime borrowers – people whose ability to repay their loans was in doubt. This was done deliberately because everybody gambled that housing prices would keep rising. Hundreds of billions of dollars were disbursed in this gamble. The sub-prime mortgages were then bundled into packages and traded as financial instruments. Despite the stark lessons offered by the ‘real estate’ angles of the 1991 meltdown in Japan and the 1997 meltdown in East Asia (when institutions gambled on property prices rising forever), virtually all American banks and financial institutions partied as if there was no tomorrow. In 2005, the increase in home equity loans was six times higher than growth in real wage based incomes in America! During the same year, American households splurged $110 billion of borrowed money – most of the debt coming through the sub-prime route. Something had to give. By 2007, sub-prime borrowers started defaulting and by the end of 2007, the trickle of defaults had become an avalanche. That’s when the Domino effect took over and starting with Bear Stearns, financial institutions started tumbling one after the other. Lehman Brothers and AIG are the most recent; certainly not the last.

And if they are to be responsible, why shouldn’t they take the money as debt from banks or owners of capital where the entrepreneurs know that they are obliged to give regular returns – unlike on equity? But then, let’s not get so extreme! The share market is one of the lifelines of the (inhuman) capitalist system, which unfortunately appeals most to the selfish human personality and psyche. And since I am all for democracy and freedom of choice, I would keep my loud thinking to myself – though that’s exactly the reason we haven’t yet gone public. As an organisation, we believe in being responsible spenders. Thus, we will go to the market the day we know we will be able to do so much productive work with the money generated that we will give the right returns to our investors.

B&E: Dabur has paid a lot of heed to product expansion and in such expansion plans how have you managed to retain your core competency? SD: We have our own model of expansion, which is driven around our brand and not so much driven around category. And we evolve our brands across the category and that’s how the Dabur equity has worked. Like –Vatika; we have positioned it as natural beauty product and people narrow cast it as natural beauty product for hair so therefore the equity remains fairly combated rather than having a foray in skin care and no strong combating. Therefore equity remains highly focused and the brand equity remains very well articulated and very well visible to consumer. As we grow we will have new brands but we will not compromise with our brand equity and this will help us to create core competency.

B&E: You have been with Dabur for more than a decade; under your leadership what are the changes that happen and what where the challenges that you have to overcome for implementing such challenges? SD: I have been with the company for complete 15 years but we completely took over the control of operational management only since past six years. Since then we have made architectural changes in the organisation, we have made the changes in the brand. Most importantly we have made in depth changes across the various verticals of all our business. Changes were made in human resources and now we have a substantial amount of talent.

The first part was to build the top team and perhaps that was the most challenging work. Institutionalizing the best in class process was also another challenge but once the top team was placed, we knew we were on.

Rural India, on the other hand, is one area where the company seems to be on a more comfortable footing. Duggal is confident that as long as there is money in the pockets of farmers, the fortunes of the company are secure. While Dabur does not have an ITC e-Choupal or HUL Project Shakti like story to tell regarding its rural market foray, the company has done a lot of capex to strengthen its core brands like Vatika, Amla and Gulabari in these markets. the company has gone beyond tradtional media like radio, TV, et al to engage directly with the customer through events like Banke Dikhao Rani pratiyogita with Dabur Amla Hair Oil, or Koyal Punjab Di contest with Vatika and Miss Fresh Face of UP model hunt with Dabur Gulabari.

The economic slowdown, on the other hand, does not have a significant impact on Dabur''s plans, except that, the company may be more cautious in taking up a big ticket international acquisition at the moment. Being debt free, and having made the Fem acquisition on internal cash accruals, Dabur has no problems with the liquidity crunch either. Capex requirements are relatively low, so they are not altering their linear path significantly. While that is a good thing, it also signiies that while Dabur may have put up a more aggressive face in recent times, it is still a company that is relatively slow with regard to its forward movement in the market, and the company has a more stable growth chart as opposed to a risk laden one.

NSE fights MCX, wrongly or rightly!

Call the unhealthy nature of competition in a duopoly market, but within 6 months of the start of trading in currency futures, the titans (NSE & Multi Commodity Exchange, MCX) are at loggerheads. In a bid to subdue competition, NSE has struck MCX where it hurts the most – it placed Financial Technologies (FTIL), which has 80% stake in MCX, on the ‘watch list’, citing systems and performance issues on multiple occasions. With MCX taking recourse to legal action, the rivalry is getting filthier; and why not, after all, a daily turnover volume worth $400 million is at stake for MCX! Though NSE claims a solid reason for the action taken against FTIL, which provides software to brokers to connect to and trade in the exchanges. Worse, December 9, 2008 saw FTIL alleging that NSE was attempting to remove it from the panel of software vendors!
